SUMMARY:Kurt Weill: His Life\, His Songs
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Kurt Weill with a screening of Susan Waterfall’s 2021 film\, The Life and Music of Kurt Weill\, followed by a live performance by mezzo-soprano Silvie Jensen with pianist Sarah Cahill. We’ll see the uncut film (including the 21+ minutes missing from the abbreviated\, 49-minute version that got 32\,000+ YouTube views)\, and then enjoy a brief musical performance. \nWhat happens when an impeccably trained young German composer decides he wants a new audience? When a nice Jewish boy starts hanging out with a Marxist poet and a Viennese flapper? When the distinction between highbrow and lowbrow becomes irrelevant? Susan Waterfall and her team have created a film describing Kurt Weill’s life and work\, including a unique collection of both historic and contemporary performances of his songs. Weill communicated the soul and style of Modernity while he survived the sweeping historic changes of Weimar Berlin\, the rise of Hitler\, Paris in the early 1930s\, and Broadway in the 1940s. A Q&A with filmmaker Susan Waterfall will follow the screening. \nAfter a brief intermission\, we’ll be treated to a performance by mezzo-soprano Silvie Jensen and pianist Sarah Cahill of selected Weill works. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\nBUY TICKETS

SUMMARY:Susan Waterfall: Debussy Préludes Book II (two-part series)
DESCRIPTION:Are you longing for world travel? Do you need a bit of Belle Époque Paris? Maybe you’re curious about musical modernism? Susan Waterfall is back\, with Book Two of Debussy’s Préludes for Piano\, which will provide you with all of the above. Armchair travel is a necessity during the pandemic. Historic and current performances along with fascinating art and photographs will bring to life Debussy’s final twelve preludes\, written before the outbreak of World War One. Here’s another opportunity for lifelong learners to find out more about Debussy and deepen their appreciation of these gems of the piano repertoire. \nAfter Susan’s recent presentations of Book One: “I’ve never heard Susan Waterfall before and was impressed with her knowledgeable and interesting talk. The photography was beautiful and really helped me see the music differently. Those visions certainly set the mood of the music and helped make more sense of the sounds I was hearing. On the whole\, it was another bit of MMF magic to introduce me to and help me understand music\, thoughts and ideas that I have missed in my ongoing musical experience.” —Sea Ranch\, CA \nFridays\, February 26 and March 5\, 12:00-1:15 PM PST\nGET FREE SERIES TICKET (before Part 1 Feb 26) \n\nGET FREE TICKET (after Part 1 Feb 26) \n\n\n	\n Pianist and Associate Artistic Director Susan Waterfall has created many multi-media\, narrated settings for chamber music for the Festival\, ranging from Bartok’s Women (2003) to Tales of a Parisian Salon (2004) to They Left a Light\, Masterpieces from Nazi Prison Camps (2009). SUMMARY:Discover Lieder
DESCRIPTION:A one-time\, free introduction to Lieder. What is German Lieder? Lieder is literally the German word for songs\, though the term is usually used in reference to German songs of the Romantic Period (19th Century) written for voice and piano. What makes Lieder unique is that the piano does more than merely accompany; it has an equal relationship with the voice and shares in the storytelling of the song. Join Jenny Matteucci and Daniel Lockert as they delve deep into an amazing tradition of songwriting\, and help you appreciate this often-misunderstood art form. They will play for you some of the greatest Lieder singers of our time\, and they’ll perform also. \nBook your complimentary ticket; you’ll receive an email reminder the day of the event. \n\nGET FREE TICKETS (required)\n\n	\n \nIn 2017 Jenny Matteucci\, who has an extensive background as a performer\, choral director\, and voice teacher\, became the Festival Chorus Master; joined by her husband\, Daniel Lockert\, a marvelous accompanist and an outstanding language coach. The artistic leadership of this dynamic duo is a wonderful addition to the Festival\, and has made possible an ongoing series of courses in various aspects of singing.

SUMMARY:Wonder Women: Hidden Heroines of Music History\, Kayleen Asbo\, Ph. D.
DESCRIPTION:Composer\, musicologist and pianist Kayleen Asbo\, the acclaimed cultural historian for the Santa Rosa Symphony\, will introduce us through lecture and performance to four of the most fascinating women from music history. Meet Hildegard von Bingen\, a Benedictine abbess of the 12th century whose art\, music and writings about nature contain revelations of wonder for our own time; Italian courtesan Barbara Strozzi\, whose ravishing works for voice and lute are models of intimate sensuality; the genteel Fanny Mendelssohn\, who was the musical colleague and soul mate of her famous brother Felix\, and whose own magnificent 400+ compositions (some published under Felix’s name) are only being rediscovered and published in the past few decades. Our afternoon ends with a performance of the music of the heroic Clara Schumann\, dubbed the “High Priestess of the Piano” by Franz Liszt\, a woman whose lifelong career as celebrated performer and teacher also encompassed the role of mother to eight children\, muse and champion for both her beloved husband Robert Schumann and her devoted friend Johannes Brahms.\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n	\n \nKayleen Asbo is a passionate scholar: a cultural historian\, musician\, writer and teacher who weaves myth\, music\, psychology\, history and art with experiential learning. A faculty member of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music for seventeen years\, Kayleen also teaches regularly for the Osher Life Long Learning Institutes at UC Berkeley\, Sonoma State University and Dominican University. Her classes on a wide array of topics ranging from Depth Psychology to Dante to Contemporary Classical Music have been hailed as “inspirational\,” “fascinating and compelling\,” “transformational” and “truly life-changing.” \nEducated at Smith College\, Mills College\, the San Francisco Conservatory\, Pacifica Graduate Institute and the University of California\, Kayleen wrote her Ph.D dissertation on Passion and Paradox: The Myths of Mary Magdalene in Music\, Art and Culture. Kayleen also holds three master’s degrees: one each in music (piano performance)\, mythology and psychology. Kayleen has been a guest presenter and lecturer on the intersection of history\, mythology\, psychology and the arts at Oxford University in England\, the Assisi Institute of Depth Psychology Conference in Italy\, the Houston Jung Institute\, Chartres Cathedral in France\, Grace Cathedral and the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. In 2016\, she has taken on the roles as a pre-concert lecturer with the San Francisco Opera and Santa Rosa Symphony and has become a consultant in archetypal psychology\, myth and ritual for Proctor and Gamble.
