SUMMARY:Festival Orchestra 1\, featuring Stephen Prutsman 2019
DESCRIPTION:Festival Orchestra with Stephen Prutsman\n\nFeatured wines at this performance. \nTo open the classical festival\, Maestro Allan Pollack will lead the orchestra in Respighi’s evocative tone poem\, Pines of Rome; Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21\, with its lyrical second movement; and Pictures at an Exhibition\, the stunning suite Mussorgsky wrote in honor of a painter friend who died young. \nStephen Prutsman has been described as one of the most innovative musicians of his time. Moving easily from classical to jazz to world music styles as a pianist\, composer and conductor\, Prutsman continues to explore and seek common ground and relationships in the music of all cultures and languages. From 2004–2007 Stephen was Artistic Partner with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra\, where he conducted concertos from the keyboard\, performed in chamber ensembles\, conducted works of living composers\, developed and arranged collaborations for their Engine 408 series of contemporary and world music\, and wrote several new works for the orchestra. From 2009–2012 he was the Artistic Director of the Cartagena International Festival of Music\, South America’s largest festival of its kind\, programming and curating concerts with themes ranging from Mozart celebrations\, to eclectic evenings of folk and popular music of the Americas\, to hybrid programs fusing art and dance music of multiple musical dimensions. \n\n\n\n	\n \nProof of completed COVID-19 vaccination\, including at least one booster\, is required\, and masks must be properly worn at all times while on event premises. Though it might exceed official requirements\, this policy is based on current conditions and the results of our most recent audience survey. \n\n \n	\n\n\n\nCHOOSE SEATS AND BUY

SUMMARY:Calder Quartet 2019
DESCRIPTION:Back for a seventh year of sensitive and eloquent playing\, the Calder will perform Ravel’s String Quartet in F Major; Daniel Bjarnason’s Still Shot; and Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 13 in B-flat Major Op. 130 (with Finale).\nPerformances like these — freshly rethought\, impeccably played — do more than provide enjoyable listening. They reveal hidden dimensions\, renew a bond with the composer\, and justify the continuance of familiar works in the repertory. Boston Globe \nThe Calder’s Beethoven was full of flaring drama\, furrowed brows and quiet intensity. But\, with the tightest of ensemble playing and well-judged balancing of instrumental voices\, the piece retained its classical integrity and polished finish. Washington Post \nI’ve written before that every time I hear the Calder\, the ensemble seems to have reached a new level. That remains true\, and now only the stars are the limit\, as the Calder takes its place as one of America’s most satisfying — and most enterprising — quartets. Mark Swed\, Los Angeles Times \nFeatured wines at this performance \n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \nProof of completed COVID-19 vaccination\, including at least one booster\, is required\, and masks must be properly worn at all times while on event premises. Though it might exceed official requirements\, this policy is based on current conditions and the results of our most recent audience survey. \n\n \n	\n\n\n\nCHOOSE SEATS AND BUY

SUMMARY:Brahms: His Life and Times\, featuring Susan Waterfall 2019
DESCRIPTION:Brahms’ momentous meeting with Clara and Robert Schumann when he was only 20 forged a bond of love and familial connection that lasted throughout Brahms’ and Clara’s lifetimes. Susan’s lecture will be supplemented with images and recorded examples. The two chamber concerts divide Brahms’ life roughly in half: before and after 1878\, when he grew the bushy beard he was able to hide behind for the rest of his life. \n\n\n	\n \nProof of completed COVID-19 vaccination\, including at least one booster\, is required\, and masks must be properly worn at all times while on event premises. Though it might exceed official requirements\, this policy is based on current conditions and the results of our most recent audience survey. \n\n \n	\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n\n	\n \nBrahms: His Life and Times\n \nDuring his long and productive life\, Johannes Brahms (1833-97) interacted with most of the significant musicians and artists of 19th century. \nJoin Susan Waterfall and an array of exceptional Festival musicians for four days of lectures and narrated concerts about Johannes Brahms’ life and music. \nExplore the Series \n“Waterfall’s productions always present exciting\, absorbing playing of great music\, but are also rare\, distinctive examples of what can be called music education\, though they’re more conversational\, truly a sharing of perspective\, interest\, anecdote. There’s a sense of immediacy to her delivery\, weaving in and out of the playing\, an intimately conceived present awareness of this heritage. It’s something unique that needs to be experienced.” Ken Bullock\, Berkeley Daily Planet

There’s a sense of immediacy to her delivery\, weaving in and out of the playing\, an intimately conceived present awareness of this heritage. It’s something unique that needs to be experienced.” Ken Bullock\, Berkeley Daily Planet
