SUMMARY:Kurt Weill: His Life\, His Songs
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Kurt Weill with a screening of Susan Waterfall’s 2021 film\, The Life and Music of Kurt Weill\, followed by a live performance by mezzo-soprano Silvie Jensen with pianist Sarah Cahill. We’ll see the uncut film (including the 21+ minutes missing from the abbreviated\, 49-minute version that got 32\,000+ YouTube views)\, and then enjoy a brief musical performance. \nWhat happens when an impeccably trained young German composer decides he wants a new audience? When a nice Jewish boy starts hanging out with a Marxist poet and a Viennese flapper? When the distinction between highbrow and lowbrow becomes irrelevant? Susan Waterfall and her team have created a film describing Kurt Weill’s life and work\, including a unique collection of both historic and contemporary performances of his songs. Weill communicated the soul and style of Modernity while he survived the sweeping historic changes of Weimar Berlin\, the rise of Hitler\, Paris in the early 1930s\, and Broadway in the 1940s. A Q&A with filmmaker Susan Waterfall will follow the screening. \nAfter a brief intermission\, we’ll be treated to a performance by mezzo-soprano Silvie Jensen and pianist Sarah Cahill of selected Weill works. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\nBUY TICKETS

SUMMARY:Festival Orchestra 4
DESCRIPTION:The final concert will open with Ad Matrem\, Henryk Gorecki’s sacred work for soprano\, mixed chorus\, and orchestra. Based on the text of the 13th century hymn\, Stabat Mater Dolorosa\, this piece is almost a symphonic poem. Lux Aeterna\, by Morten Lauridsen\, is a choral work fashioned on texts from several different Latin sources\, including the Requiem mass\, with each movement containing a reference to light and all it connotes. The concert and festival will come to a fitting end with Rite of Spring\, Stravinsky’s evocation of the Slavic folk spirit\, with its violent sacrificial dance and extraordinary elemental power.\n\n\n	\n \n2025 Featured Composer: Igor Stravinsky\n \nFor 2025\, Susan Waterfall’s composer series will feature the innovative and influential Igor Stravinsky. Immerse yourself in his world and his music\, and understand how his music evolved over his lifetime with narrated chamber recitals featuring exciting guest artists\, and various other settings of Stravinsky’s work across the Festival. \nWaterfall’s productions always present exciting\, absorbing playing of great music\, but are also rare\, distinctive examples of what can be called music education\, though they’re more conversational\, truly a sharing of perspective\, interest\, anecdote. There’s a sense of immediacy to her delivery\, weaving in and out of the playing\, an intimately conceived present awareness of this heritage. It’s something unique that needs to be experienced.” -Ken Bullock\, Berkeley Daily Planet\n \nExplore the Series \n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n Public ticket sales begin May 6\, 2026\, at noon Pacific. DESCRIPTION:Festival Orchestra with guest conductor Francesco Lecce-Chong and soloist Julian Rhee. “Igor on My Mind\,” Allan Pollack’s fun-loving\, energetic and rhythmic piece\, impishly steals motifs straight out of Igor Stravinsky’s orchestral music. Then the real Stravinsky will be heard in the Violin Concerto in D\, a neoclassical piece in four movements\, written in the summer of 1931. It was used by George Balanchine as music for two ballets. Beethoven’s 5th Symphony is one of the most-frequently played compositions in classical music\, but after the familiar opening notes\, it offers surprising new passages to the close listener. At the time he wrote it\, Beethoven was becoming increasingly deaf and correspondingly interested in the music’s theme of heroic struggle. \n\n\n	\n \n2025 Featured Composer: Igor Stravinsky\n \nFor 2025\, Susan Waterfall’s composer series will feature the innovative and influential Igor Stravinsky. SUMMARY:Stravinsky: Chamber Music for the Concert Hall
DESCRIPTION:L’histoire du soldat shows off Stravinsky’s familiarity with a wide range of musical styles: pasodoble\, tango\, waltz\, ragtime\, klezmer\, and even Luther’s Ein Feste Burg. Concerto in E-flat (“Dumbarton Oaks”) is one of Stravinsky’s two chamber concertos. Stravinsky’s Octet for Wind Instruments is scored for an unusual combination of woodwind and brass. Completed in 1923\, it is generally regarded as the beginning of his neoclassicism. Renard\, or The Fox\, is an opera-ballet that tells the story of the fox who deceives the cock\, the cat\, and the goat\, but who is caught in the end. \n\n \n \n \n \n Ryan Murray\, conductor\n \n \n \n Salvatore Atti\, tenor in Renard\n \n \n \n Matthew Peterson\, baritone in Renard\n \n \n \n Marius Constantin\, tenor in Renard\n \n \n \n Jason Detwiler\, bass in Renard\n \n \n \n\n\n\n	\n Public ticket sales begin May 6\, 2026\, at noon Pacific. SUMMARY:Foxglove
DESCRIPTION:Twenty-three years ago\, three members of what would soon be Foxglove gathered on stage at the Caspar Community Center to record a live album in front of a capacity crowd. This trio of multitalented musicians—Morgan Daniel\, Gwyneth Moreland\, and John Bush—had been building a following at small\, local venues\, showcasing Gwyneth’s lovely voice\, Morgan’s songwriting\, John’s instrumental prowess\, and some sweet sibling harmonies. Booi Volk\, the future fourth member\, was in the audience that night\, a mandolin player whose playing would become a signature part of Foxglove’s sound. Since then the players have been involved with projects and other groups that have taken them to various parts of the globe\, but they always come home to their home in Mendocino County.\n\n\n	\n Public ticket sales begin May 6\, 2026\, at noon Pacific. SUMMARY:Kenny Washington\, with John R. Burr
DESCRIPTION:Recently dubbed the “Superman of the Bay Area jazz scene” by the San Francisco Chronicle\, Kenny Washington is a jazz virtuoso who thrills audiences with his soulful interpretations\, seemingly limitless range\, and rapid-fire scatting. Ravi Coltrane has declared Kenny his favorite male vocalist\, and Mark Murphy said in a Jazz Times interview that Kenny was the only contemporary male vocalist carrying on the tradition. \nThe thing is\, Washington slays ’em wherever he performs. Standing not quite five-foot-two\, he’s an oversize talent who can scat with the harmonic daring and rhythmic command of a bebop saxophonist\, croon with the simmering soul of Donny Hathaway\, and interpret standards with such intelligence and emotional commitment it’s like Rodgers and Hart wrote “I Didn’t Know What Time It Was” with him in mind.”- Andrew Gilbert\, eastbayexpress.com \nPianist John R. Burr combines a jazzy style with a love of folk music and singer-songwriters\, and has lent his talents to recordings by the Alison Brown Quartet and Paul McCandless\, among others. McCandless returned the favor by guesting on Burr’s debut solo effort\, 1998’s Piedmont Avenue. \n\n\n\n\n	\n Public ticket sales begin May 6\, 2026\, at noon Pacific. SUMMARY:Festival Orchestra 1\, with soloist James D'León
DESCRIPTION:In the opening classical concert\, Allan Pollack will lead the musicians in Igor Stravinsky’s 1922 Pulcinella Suite\, one of the ballets commissioned by Diaghilev. We’ll catch our breaths when the orchestra and pianist James D’León transport us to Nights in the Gardens of Spain\, Manuel de Falla’s set of nocturnes for piano and orchestra. The evening will end on very high notes with Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony. Ever since its 1888 premiere\, it has been a hit with audiences for its soaring melodies and dramatic composition.\n\n\n	\n \n2025 Featured Composer: Igor Stravinsky\n \nFor 2025\, Susan Waterfall’s composer series will feature the innovative and influential Igor Stravinsky.
