SUMMARY:Festival Orchestra and Chorus 2014
DESCRIPTION:Featured wines at this performance \nThe final orchestral concert of great choral works by Haydn and Bach will provide a fitting climax to the Festival.  Handel’s Royal Fireworks for orchestra alone will precede Bach’s Cantata #51 and Haydn’s Creation\, sung by large choir and soloists. There is nothing as inspirational as hearing a powerful choir giving heartfelt voice to these sacred texts. A concert to warm the hearts and uplift and soothe the spirits of the entire audience.\niPad/iPhone/Safari Users Click for Ticketing

SUMMARY:Emerging Artists Concert 2014
DESCRIPTION:This is a recital by the outrageously excellent young string players from the Emerging Artists program. The Emerging Artists have won scholarships to receive intensive training at the Festival\, and an opportunity to perform with established professionals in orchestral and chamber concerts. Don’t miss this recital. These are tomorrow’s renowned musicians at the outset of their careers.\niPad/iPhone/Safari Users Click for Ticketing \n\n \nThe Emerging Artists Program began in 1991\, the Mendocino Music Festival’s fifth season\, when the Young Musicians Scholarship Program was inaugurated to nurture young classical musicians in the community and beyond\, and to reinforce orchestral resources. Every year 8 – 12 instrumentalists—talented wind and brass players\, string players and pianists—were chosen to play in the Festival Orchestra and to present chamber music programs\, coached by professionals. By combining the best features of a music camp with a rigorous professional festival\, the program enabled young players to grow musically while enjoying camaraderie with fellow participants and the festival musicians. Like all visiting musicians\, the students were housed with local families\, allowing them to interface with the broader community. \nBeginning in 1998\, the program focused exclusively on string players. In 2007\, Karl Goldstein\, who served as director of the program for many years\, changed the program’s name to “Emerging Artists.” Other directors and coaches have included Anne Crowden\, Bonnie Hampton\, Susan Waterfall\, Burke Schuchmann\, Christina Mok\, Eric Sung\, Jill Brindel\, Roy Malan\, Susan Freier and Julie Feldman\, the current Program Director. \nThe Program Alumni Page gives an impressive peek into the value of this program with personal statements from many of the more than 160 alumni since 1991 on the importance of the Festival experience in their development as musicians\, and on their achievements and career paths. The alumni represent an international community of young musicians who came together for a magical summer experience\, most of whom have gone on to have successful professional musical careers as players\, teachers and administrators who nurture young people themselves. \nThe Festival is proud of the Emerging Artists Program and remains committed to encouraging\, nurturing and showcasing young artists each season to enable them to make significant contributions to the communities where they live and play. This program is free to participants thanks to the generosity of the donors of the Mendocino Music Festival.

SUMMARY:Poncho Sanchez and his Latin Jazz Band 2014
DESCRIPTION:Featured wines at this performance Poncho Sanchez’s music is a swirl of some of the hottest colors and brightest lights to emerge from either side of the border. At every show Latin jazz\, swing\, bebop\, salsa and other infectious grooves collide and churn with results that are no less than dazzling. Among the more prominent figures that inform his music are conga drummer and composer Chano Pozo\, and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie. \nPoncho Sanchez says\, “There’s room for a lot of different sounds in our music. We put it all together in a pot\, boil it together and come out with a big stew. This isn’t some marketing strategy to sell records. These are the sounds I grew up with. So when I play this music\, I’m not telling a lie. I’m telling my story. This is the real thing.” \nIn 2000\, Sanchez and his ensemble won the Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album for their work on the Concord Picante album Latin Soul. In 2012 Sanchez received A Lifetime Achievement Award from the Latin Recording Academy. As a teen\, Sanchez first learned to play guitar from “the guy across the street” because he couldn’t afford to buy an instrument. He gravitated to percussion after his siblings introduced him to the music that was then called cha-cha music. \nThe Poncho Sanchez Latin Jazz Band is:\n[table “” not found /]\n\niPad/iPhone/Safari Users Click for Ticketing

SUMMARY:Festival Chamber Players 2014
DESCRIPTION:The concert will consist of the Mozart Quintet in E flat Major for Piano and Winds K.452\, and the Schumann Quintet in E flat Major for Piano and Strings\, played by the world-class Festival Orchestra’s principal players\, joined by pianists Miles Graber and Carolyn Steinbuck. \nMozart wrote his only piano quintet at the height of his powers\, when he was 28 years old.  He had never before attempted a piece for such a combination of instruments: bassoon\, clarinet\, horn and oboe. He wrote to his father\, “I myself consider it to be the best thing I have written in my life.”  For Schumann\, it was the first time a piano was combined with what is now known as a string quartet (substituting cello for double bass). The quintet is considered one of the major works of nineteenth century chamber music.\niPad/iPhone/Safari Users Click for Ticketing

SUMMARY:Suzanna Smith and Kenny Washington 2014
DESCRIPTION:Superheroes of the Bay Area Jazz Scene.\nListen to the magic as Smith\, who combines the confessional imperative of a singer/songwriter with the rhythmic acuity of a jazz chanteuse\, teams up with Washington\, a jazz virtuoso who thrills audiences with his soulful interpretations\, seemingly limitless range\, and rapid-fire scatting. Both have superb voices that glide effortlessly into the stratosphere. The music comes from a tradition of soul that is deep and heartfelt.  Their rhythmic energy and imaginative interpretations bring this lovely music to life in a way that is both traditional and completely new. \nSmith is “…a truly unique talent\, whose musical stock is that proverbial arrow pointing straight up…organic\, eclectic\, and contemporary\, yet rooted in the tradition of what old school vocal jazz was once all about—soul.” Brent Black\, criticaljazz.com \nKenny Washington is “the Superman of the Bay Area jazz scene\, a vocalist with an exuberantly supple tenor that glides effortlessly into the stratosphere.”  Andrew Gilbert\, SF Chronicle\niPad/iPhone/Safari Users Click for Ticketing

SUMMARY:Frederica von Stade 2014
DESCRIPTION:Featured wines at this performance \nThe wonder of an art song is that it tells a story\, defines its characters and makes an emotional connection in just a few brief minutes. In this recital\, with pianist Miles Graber\, von Stade will sing songs by Ned Rorem\, Louis Guy\, Jake Heggie\, Maurice Ravel\, Virgil Thompson\, Aaron Copland\, Gustav Mahler\, and Steven Sondheim and others. \n“Even if she were not one of the great singers of our day\, mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade could probably draw a full house of people eager just to be in her presence and watch her be herself. She’s that enchanting. Von Stade communicates something to her listeners – a startling radiance compounded of serene grace and simple delight – that few other recitalists can match. \n \n“Those qualities came through in the breezy\, unaffected way she introduced the evening’s repertoire – a series of French chansons\, some new American tunes and a smidgen of Schoenberg – and they came through even more clearly in her singing itself. Von Stade transformed each piece into a gentle\, shimmering moment of emotional truth. Her phrasing is eloquent and subtle\, her technique discreetly precise\, her diction magnificent.”  Joshua Kosman\, San Francisco Chronicle \nMiles Graber has developed a wide reputation as an accompanist and collaborative pianist for instrumentalists and singers. He has been associated with numerous solo artists\, including Itzhak Perlman\, Camilla Wicks\, and Sarah Chang\, as well as with such ensembles as the San Francisco Chamber Soloists\, Midsummer Mozart\, the Oakland-East Bay Symphony\, the California Symphony\, Oakland Lyric Opera\, Berkeley Opera\, Opera San Jose\, and the San Francisco Camerata. \niPad/iPhone/Safari Users Click for Ticketing

SUMMARY:Kathleen Grace Band 2014
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, July 19\, 2014\, 3:00 PM\nPreston Hall \nA favorite of the Festival as Big Band singer\, Kathleen Grace returns with her own band and her own songs that fuse the musical language of jazz\, rock and folk with extraordinary storytelling abilities. \n“Smart\, alluring and evocative” (Washington Post)\, Kathleen Grace has traveled the world sharing her country\, folk and jazz inspired music with audiences from New York to Peru. Her latest release\, No Place to Fall\, presents Grace’s dynamic original songs alongside revelatory covers of artists as diverse as Duke Ellington\, Tom Waits\, Townes Van Zandt and The Meat Puppets. Grace’s trademark pure sound and deep lyrical connection infuse every moment of the album\, from her deliciously honky-tonk interpretations of standards\, to her own original music. The LA Times has described Grace’s latest project as “Haunting steel-guitar riffs crossed with Grace’s jazz-infused interpretations? Pure buttah!” The ten tracks on No Place to Fall were produced by Sheldon Gomberg whose recent work with Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite just won the 2014 Grammy for Best Blues Album. Grace will be joined on tour this summer by longtime Nashville and LA-based guitarist David Steele\, who has spent years performing with John Prine\, Steve Earle and Lucinda Williams. Her frequent collaborator\, Erik Kertes\, will join her on bass. \nkathleengrace.com \niPad/iPhone/Safari Users Click for Ticketing

SUMMARY:Claire Lynch Band: Taking Bluegrass to New Heights 2014
DESCRIPTION:Featured wines at this performance Combining strength and purity of voice\, enchanting and subtle song writing\, and superb musicianship\, the Claire Lynch Band takes bluegrass to new heights. The band is known for its intense sound\, as well as for brilliant picking\, of course. Claire Lynch was winner of the International Bluegrass Association’s award for Female Vocalist of the Year 3 years in a row! \n“Listening to Claire Lynch sing is not something to be undertaken casually.  Her songs and stage presence demand the listener’s rapt attention.  She’s an intensely soulful singer\, whose distinctive voice resonates with power and strength\, yet retains an engaging innocence and crystalline purity.  She’s also a songwriter of extraordinary ability\, who can bring listeners to their feet with her buoyant rhythms or to their knees with her sometimes almost unbearably poignant and insightful lyrics.” Dave Higgs\, WPLN Nashville; WAMU Washington DC. \n“Lynch’s voice has the sweet high country twang of a teen singing on the porch\, but also a deeper womanly tone to tell her stories and tug the heart.  Aside from Lynch’s singing\, one is struck by the almost symphonic quality to the down-home instrumentation of the arrangements…not just brilliant picking\, but sophisticated\, seemingly spontaneous composition.”  Michael Devlin\, Music Matters Magazine \nwww.clairelynch.com \niPad/iPhone/Safari Users Click for Ticketing

SUMMARY:Bachfest: Bach and Beer 2014
DESCRIPTION:Featured wines at this performance \nJ. S. Bach enjoyed life enormously\, and this certainly included beer drinking. He was often paid in beer. Find out more interesting and seldom considered facts in a multi-media lecture with historian Bob Winn\, noted beer authority Jay R. Brooks\, and scholar/pianist Susan Waterfall\, covering life in early 18th century Germany\, an overview of Bach’s life\, and beer making in Bach’s time. Beer tasting and Quodlibets! \nAnchor Brewing’s Bock Beer comes closest to resembling the beer of Bach’s time. It’s brewed from a complex blend of malts\, and fresh\, whole-cone hops. In the ancient bock tradition\, the dark-colored craft brew is released in time for springtime celebrations. Bock beers are believed to have originated in the town of Einbeck\, Germany and traditionally feature a goat on their labels. The term\, “bock” occurs in several Germanic languages and roughly translates to “billy goat.”\nSelections from Mendocino County’s own Anderson Valley Brewing Company will also be featured for tasting. \niPad/iPhone/Safari Users Click for Ticketing
