SUMMARY:The Life and Music of Kurt Weill
DESCRIPTION:Another of Susan Waterfall’s fascinating virtual presentations\, this time about Kurt Weill. This gives you an opportunity to learn more before you attend the July 18 Weill concert in Cotton Auditorium. \nWhat happens when an impeccably trained young German composer decides he wants a new audience? When a nice Jewish boy starts hanging out with a Marxist poet and a Viennese flapper? When the distinction between highbrow and lowbrow becomes irrelevant? Susan Waterfall and her team have created a film describing Kurt Weill’s life and work\, including a unique collection of both historic and contemporary performances of his songs. Weill communicated the soul and style of Modernity while he survived the sweeping historic changes of Weimar Berlin\, the rise of Hitler\, Paris in the early 1930s\, and Broadway in the 1940s. You’ll find this film a rewarding companion to the Festival’s July 18\, 2021 Weill Tribute “One Life to Live.” \nVirtual attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions Waterfall will answer in a Q&A session that will follow the main presentation. \nArt and photograph collection by Mina Cohen\nFilmed and edited by Julian Pollack\nWritten and directed by Susan Waterfall \n\n\n	\n \nProof of completed COVID-19 vaccination\, including at least one booster\, is required\, and masks must be properly worn at all times while on event premises. Though it might exceed official requirements\, this policy is based on current conditions and the results of our most recent audience survey. \n\n \n	\n\n\n\nThis is a virtual event.\nGET FREE TICKET (required)

SUMMARY:Stephen Prutsman 2021
DESCRIPTION:An enthusiast of the “Progressive” or “Art Rock” genre\, and a performer in a couple of “Prog Rock” bands in the late 70s\, Stephen Prutsman has been drawn to create solo piano (and fiendishly difficult) transcriptions of several Prog classics. For this short recital he’s chosen “Sound Chaser” by YES and GENESIS’ “Supper’s Ready.” These rich tapestries of sonic innovation make for an unusual and unique pairing with the music of another great progressive thinker and composer\, J.S. Bach. \n\n\n\n\n	\n \nProof of completed COVID-19 vaccination\, including at least one booster\, is required\, and masks must be properly worn at all times while on event premises. SUMMARY:Alexander String Quartet 2021
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year\, the San Francisco-based Alexander String Quartet is widely admired for its interpretations of Mozart\, Beethoven\, and Shostakovich. The group will play the innovative Haydn String Quartet in C Major\, Ravel’s lyrical and virtuosic String Quartet in F\, and Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 7 in F-sharp minor. The seventh of Shostakovich’s 15 string quartets was written in 1960 as a tribute to his first wife Nina\, who died in 1954. It is a compact work in three movements\, but it covers a broad expanse of emotion and musicality.\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \nProof of completed COVID-19 vaccination\, including at least one booster\, is required\, and masks must be properly worn at all times while on event premises. SUMMARY:Understanding Schubert\, with Susan Waterfall
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the virtual world premier of Susan Waterfall’s Understanding Schubert—an 85-minute video biography\, with art and portraits from Schubert’s era as well as 16 recorded musical excerpts\, including nine lieder—wherein Waterfall explores the cultural context of Schubert’s life and music\, his relationship with Romantic lyric poetry\, and his position in the middle-class homes and salons of Vienna. \nSchubert’s art emphasized individual subjectivity\, which was the thrust of Romanticism. With enormous musical and communicative gifts\, he offered his vision of the world. \nIn 1987 Maynard Solomon presented a compelling paper asserting that Schubert was homosexual and died of tertiary syphilis. Solomon claimed that Schubert had written most of his music for a Viennese subculture that was exploring different types of masculinity and reacting to restrictive codes of social behavior. Susan Waterfall avoids extreme characterizations of Schubert as a sexless “tubby tunesmith” and Schubert as a standard bearer for gay musicology.  He becomes a convincing person\, with his sexual preferences and activities only part of the troubling circumstances he encountered in modern Viennese life. \nArt and photograph collection by Mina Cohen\nFilmed and edited by Julian Pollack\nWritten and directed by Susan Waterfall \nQ&A with Susan Waterfall\, Julian Pollack and Mina Cohen will follow the screening. \nThis is a virtual event.\nSECURE YOUR TICKET

SUMMARY:The Life and Art of Claude Debussy\, with Susan Waterfall
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the exciting premiere of Susan Waterfall’s new film The Life and Art of Claude Debussy. Immerse yourself in the composer’s world\, and enhance your experience of the many Debussy offerings in this summer’s Festival: the Festival Orchestra’s Afternoon of a Faun\, the Calder’s performance of the String Quartet\, Spencer Myer’s Pour le Piano\, and the two narrated chamber music concerts Breakfast with Chou-Chou and Sounds and Perfumes of Evening. \nWaterfall’s fascinating film offers you an overview of Debussy’s major works and relationships\, with over 125 photographs and images\, and excerpts from 18 works. (replay)\n\n\n	\n \nDebussy: 2022 Featured Composer\n \nFor 2022\, Susan Waterfall’s composer series will feature the innovative and influential Claude Debussy. Immerse yourself in his world and his music\, and understand how his music evolved over his lifetime with narrated chamber recitals featuring exciting guest artists\, and various other settings of Debussy’s work across the Festival. \nExplore the Series \nIf you’d like to familiarize yourself with some of this music in advance\, we recommend the following recordings and notes: String Quartet performance\,  String Quartet notes\, more String Quartet notes\, Afternoon of a Faun performance\, Faun notes. \nWaterfall’s productions always present exciting\, absorbing playing of great music\, but are also rare\, distinctive examples of what can be called music education\, though they’re more conversational\, truly a sharing of perspective\, interest\, anecdote. There’s a sense of immediacy to her delivery\, weaving in and out of the playing\, an intimately conceived present awareness of this heritage. It’s something unique that needs to be experienced.” -Ken Bullock\, Berkeley Daily Planet

SUMMARY:Festival Orchestra 1
DESCRIPTION:Festival Orchestra with violinist Yevgeny Kutik\nMaestro Allan Pollack will open the Festival with The Phoenix\, his new composition that celebrates the victory of life over death and hope over despair. Yevgeny Kutik will solo in Prokofiev’s ethereal Violin Concerto No. 1. The concert will conclude with Beethoven’s rhythmic and lively Symphony No. 7. \nPollack\, The Phoenix\nProkofiev\, Violin concerto No. 1\nBeethoven\, Symphony No. 7 \n\n\n	\n \n \nFor 2022\, the Festival’s main stage is again temporarily transplanted from our signature Tent Concert Hall in Mendocino Headlands State Park to the beautiful\, iconic and historic 1938 Cotton Auditorium in nearby Fort Bragg. We’re pleased to also welcome the return of more intimate concerts in Preston Hall\, our smaller Mendocino venue. While we’d hoped to be back in the Tent Concert Hall this year\, the combination of pandemic-related disruptions in the availability of vital resources (such as labor) and lingering uncertainty about public health conditions this summer would have made that an unacceptably risky proposition. Meanwhile\, work is under way toward our 2023 return to our home since 1985\, the Tent Concert Hall on the Mendocino Headlands. \n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n	\n \nProof of completed COVID-19 vaccination\, including at least one booster\, is required\, and masks must be properly worn at all times while on event premises. SUMMARY:Breakfast with Chou-Chou
DESCRIPTION:Join Debussy at the breakfast table with his wife and beloved daughter\, Chou-Chou\, as his imagination is stirred by the toys in the nursery\, the paintings on the wall\, and fantasies of sunlit ancient Greece. Susan Waterfall will play the “Children’s Corner” suite\, Eric Kritz will join her on the Rhapsody for Clarinet and Piano\, and Daniel Lockert will team up with her on Six Épigraphes Antiques. Two sonatas will round out the petit-déjeuner: the darkly humorous Sonata for Cello and Piano\, and the magical Sonata for Flute\, Harp and Viola. \nChildren’s Corner Suite\nSusan Waterfall\, piano \nDoctor Gradus Ad Parnassum\nJimbo’s Lullaby\nSerenade for a Doll\nThe Snow is Dancing\nThe Little Shepherd\nGolliwog’s Cakewalk \n\nRhapsody for Clarinet and Piano\nEric Kritz\, clarinet; Susan Waterfall\, piano \n\nSonata for Cello and Piano\nBurke Schuchmann\, cello; Carolyn Steinbuck\, piano \n\n\n\nSix Épigraphes Antiques\nDaniel Lockert and Susan Waterfall\, piano \nTo Invoke Pan\nThe Nameless Tomb\nMay the Night Be Propitious\nThe Dancer with Crotales\nThe Egyptian Woman\nTo Give Thanks for Morning Rain \n\nSonata for Flute\, Harp\, and Viola\nMindy Rosenfeld\, flute; Anna Maria Mendieta\, harp; Nao Kubota\, viola \n\n\n\n	\n \nDebussy: 2022 Featured Composer\n \nFor 2022\, Susan Waterfall’s composer series will feature the innovative and influential Claude Debussy. SUMMARY:The StepCrew
DESCRIPTION:Created by Cara Butler and Jon and Nathan Pilatzke (longtime touring members of The Chieftains)\, The StepCrew combines Irish\, Tap and Ottawa Valley Step dancing\, music\, and song. The virtuosic cast of 11 dancers and musician\, made up of leading performers in today’s Celtic music scene\, has appeared on the stages of Celtic festivals all over the world. \nThe StepCrew is a brilliant visual and musical display of the most talented dancers I’ve seen. It’s refreshing to see a performance of this style based on pure ability as the dancers are certainly nothing less than virtuosic in their respective styles. The first time I saw Jon and Nathan Pilatzke dancing with Cara Butler was the best thing I’d seen since sliced bread. Having worked with them for the last eight years has been a true tonic for The Chieftains. The StepCrew does not simply draw their audience in\, they take them by the hand and remind us what dance is meant to be about – fun.”- Paddy Moloney\, The Chieftains \nThe StepCrew is a show that very simply\, cannot be missed. The focus\, energy\, and sheer virtuosity on display from the entire cast is nothing short of mind-boggling. I have yet to encounter a dance show of such unique proportions\, seamlessly blending the best of three different percussive styles into what can only be called a tour de force. The StepCrew is truly one of the most exciting things I have seen in a long time.”- Jean Butler of Riverdance\, Dancing on Dangerous Ground \n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \nFor 2022\, the Festival’s main stage is again temporarily transplanted from our signature Tent Concert Hall in Mendocino Headlands State Park to the beautiful\, iconic and historic 1938 Cotton Auditorium in nearby Fort Bragg.
