SUMMARY:Festival Chorale: A Jubilant Song
DESCRIPTION:The Mendocino Music Festival Chorale will perform a concert celebrating American composers\, including music by Aaron Copland\, Norman Dello Joio\, Gwyneth Walker\, and the lovely Frostiana by Randall Thompson. This concert was originally scheduled for 2020 but was cancelled by the pandemic\, so the Festival Chorale is particularly excited (one might even say “jubilant”) to finally be performing this distinct and beautiful music. \nIn addition to Copland\, Dello Joio\, Gwyneth Walker\, and Randall Thompson\, the Chorale will perform gorgeous Mack Wilberg arrangements of traditional songs “Down to the River to Pray” and “Shenandoah.” Barbara Faulkner will join Daniel Lockert in the four-hand accompaniments for these songs\, and for the two Copland pieces. \nJenny Matteucci\, conductor; Daniel Lockert\, piano\nFestival Chorale members are: \n\nSoprano: Cynthia Frank\, Robin Knutson\, Kathy O’Shea\, Abigail Strock\, Laura Vague\nAlto: Cathy Boxell\, Jo Britton\, Deborah Farmar\, Evelyn Harris\nTenor: Joel Ginsberg\, Patrick Gomes\, James Sibbet\, David Strock\nBass: Jim Blanton\, Paul Friesen\, Jason Kirkman\, Randy Knutson\n\n\n	\n \nThe Mendocino Music Festival Chamber Chorale\, directed by Festival Chorus Master Jenny Matteucci\, was formed in 2018 as an offshoot of the much larger Festival Chorus\, members of which were invited to audition. \nFestival Artistic Director Allan Pollack: “I’ve been touched by the dedication of the members of the Festival Chorus\, and so have wanted to create an opportunity for people who are ready to take their choral singing to the next level.” Festival Chorus Master Jenny Matteucci reports\, “It is a joy to work with a group of singers who are willing to do the hard work on vocal technique in order to make increasingly excellent and inspiring music together.” \n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n Public ticket sales begin May 6\, 2026\, at noon Pacific. Want early access to tickets\, before public sales open? Click here to find out how.\n \n	\n\n\n\nCHOOSE SEATS AND BUY

SUMMARY:Maurizio! The Life and Times of Maurice Ravel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the exciting premiere of Susan Waterfall’s new film Maurizio! The Life and Times of Maurice Ravel. Immerse yourself in the composer’s world\, and enhance your experience of the many Ravel offerings in this summer’s Festival: the Festival Orchestra’s Daphnis et Chloé Suite No. 2; the Calder’s performance of his String Quartet in F Major\, the only one he wrote; Jeffrey LaDeur and Kindra Scharich’s performance of his song cycles\, Histoires Naturelles and Deux épigrammes de Clément Marot and his Valses nobles et sentimentales for piano; and the two narrated chamber music concerts The Lure of the Exotic and The Attraction of Modernism. \nYou’ve heard music by Ravel and probably loved it. You’ve heard random gossip about this secretive composer. Now’s your chance to experience Ravel’s life and music in its historic context. With contemporary art and photographs\, and 26 musical excerpts\, you’ll get an overview of a composer whose creative life spanned the voluptuous conclusion of the Belle Epoque\, the trauma of the First World War\, and the new paths to modernism that emerged in the 20’s and 30’s. 85 years after his death\, nosy biographers are still trying to understand Ravel’s mysterious private life\, as inscrutable as his music is irresistible. \nA Q&A will follow the screening. Thanks to Deborah Whigham and Gary Ratway for sponsoring this screening. \nWritten and directed by Susan Waterfall.\nArt and photograph collection by Mina Cohen.\nFilmed and edited by Julian Pollack. \nGET TICKETS\n\n\n	\n \n2023 Featured Composer: Maurice Ravel\n \nFor 2023\, Susan Waterfall’s composer series will feature the innovative and influential Maurice Ravel. Immerse yourself in his world and his music\, and understand how his music evolved over his lifetime with narrated chamber recitals featuring exciting guest artists\, and various other settings of Ravel’s work across the Festival. \nExplore the Series \nWaterfall’s productions always present exciting\, absorbing playing of great music\, but are also rare\, distinctive examples of what can be called music education\, though they’re more conversational\, truly a sharing of perspective\, interest\, anecdote. There’s a sense of immediacy to her delivery\, weaving in and out of the playing\, an intimately conceived present awareness of this heritage. It’s something unique that needs to be experienced.” -Ken Bullock\, Berkeley Daily Planet

SUMMARY:Foxglove\, with Gwyneth Moreland
DESCRIPTION:Over the past 20 years\, Foxglove has established itself as a Mendocino County favorite. The band’s selection of heartfelt originals and carefully curated covers have featured tight harmonies and tasty string-band instrumentation. \nGwyneth Moreland\, a Mendocino County native\, was a teenager when the band was formed. She was immediately adored by Foxglove fans for her beautiful voice. Soon\, however\, Gwyneth would have fans that never heard of Foxglove as she developed her career as a singer-songwriter on the folk circuit from coast to coast. This has only made Foxglove richer as her songs have become part of the Foxglove lexicon. Gwyneth plays guitar and accordion. www.gwynethmoreland.com \nMorgan Daniel\, Gwyneth’s older brother\, has been playing guitar and writing songs since “the garage band days” in the 80s. He shares lead vocal and songwriting duties with Gwyneth. He is also a luthier (he built Gwyneth’s guitar). www.morgandaniel.com \nJohn Bush is an essential part of the music scene in Mendocino–if you’ve taken in live music on the coast over the past four decades\, you’ve likely enjoyed his musicianship. Foxglove’s followers know about his prowess on the fretless bass and his soulful voice\, but one might also have seen him playing drums\, guitar\, keyboards\, or even the saxophone in genres from jazz and prog rock to country and blues. \nWhen Booi Volk joined the band in late 2002\, what was “Moreland\, Daniel\, and Bush” became Foxglove\, and it’s been that way ever since. Booi first arrived with a mandolin. Then he showed up with a banjo. Then a guitar. Even a hand-pan. Whatever instrument he is playing conveys his sensitivity to the greater musical cause (and his sense of humor). From bluegrass to brazilian choro\, Booi brings it all to the Foxglove sound. \n\n\n\n\n	\n Public ticket sales begin May 6\, 2026\, at noon Pacific.
SUMMARY:Blind Boys of Alabama
DESCRIPTION:The Blind Boys of Alabama have the rare distinction of being recognized around the world as both living legends and modern-day innovators.  They are not just gospel singers borrowing from old traditions; the group helped to define those traditions in 20th century and almost single-handedly created a new gospel sound for the 21st.  Since the original members first sang together as kids at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind in the late 1930s (including Jimmy Carter\, who leads the group today)\, the band has persevered through seven decades to become one of the most recognized and decorated roots music groups in the world.\n\n\n	\n Public ticket sales begin May 6\, 2026\, at noon Pacific. SUMMARY:Kalil Amar Wilson
DESCRIPTION:Kalil Wilson’s bright re-imaginings of jazz standards and originals are informed by the rich history of great jazz singing and meld with their heartfelt\, eclectic stylings. An Oakland native\, they are the offsping of Nigerian bassist/bandleader Babá Ken Okulolo and an American mom with a record collection of vintage jazz\, African\, R&B\, and salsa. Mentored by the Oakland Youth Chorus and the Young Musicians Program at UC Berkeley\, they then went on to UCLA’s Voice and Opera program while earning an honors degree in ethnomusicology. Yet they found themself gravitating back to jazz\, and were encouraged in that pursuit by jazz legend Kenny Burrell. Since their first album\, “Easy to Love\,” critics and audiences alike have fallen in love with their music.\nKalil has the gift! I know it when I hear it. He is anointed.”- Carlos Santana \n\n\n\n\n	\n Public ticket sales begin May 6\, 2026\, at noon Pacific. Want early access to tickets\, before public sales open? SUMMARY:Festival Orchestra 2\, The Barber of Seville (concert version)
DESCRIPTION:Concert Version; Guest Conductor Ryan Murray\nThe Barber of Seville\, or The Useless Precaution\, is an opera buffa in two acts by Gioachino Rossini. Musicologists believe that the music was composed in just under three weeks\, although the famous overture was actually recycled from two earlier Rossini operas. Nonetheless\, The Barber has proven to be one of the greatest masterpieces of comedy in music\, and has been described as the “opera buffa of all opere buffe.” \n\n \n \n \n \n Laura Krumm\, Rosina (mezzo-soprano)\n \n \n \n Robert Balonek\, Figaro (baritone)\n \n \n \n Robert McPherson\, Count Almaviva (tenor)\n \n \n \n \n \n Nathan Stark\, Basilio (bass)\n \n \n \n Matthew Miksak\, Dr. Bartolo (bass)\n \n \n \n Nicole Young\, Berta (soprano)\n \n \n \n\n\n\n	\n Public ticket sales begin May 6\, 2026\, at noon Pacific. SUMMARY:Piano Series: Ralph Van Raat and Heather Pinkham\, duo pianos
DESCRIPTION:The artists will play John Adams’ Hallelujah Junction for two pianos\, named after a small truck stop on US 395 near the California–Nevada border. Pinkham’s Mechanical Transcendence for two pianos tells the story of an android that wishes to become human. Joep Franssens’ Old Songs\, New Songs for two pianos will be followed by another Pinkham composition\, Onward and Upward for two pianos. Adams’ Short Ride in a Fast Machine\, a four- hand piano crowd-pleaser\, will close out the performance.\nI enjoy Van Raat on recording\, but given the chance to hear him again live\, I would run\, not walk.”- Christian B. Carey\, Musical America \nHeather Pinkham has everything it takes to become a phenomenon. SUMMARY:Festival Big Band\, featuring Maiya Sykes
DESCRIPTION:This year the big band musicians are going to find their groove with Maiya Sykes\, a former back-up singer whose rendition of “Stay with Me” on The Voice in 2014 catapulted her to lead singer fame. Based in Los Angeles\, Sykes is a classically trained musician who graduated from Yale and studied with Betty Carter and Nina Simone. Her recent recording—a big band tribute to Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley—showcases her mastery of this music and augurs well for a rocking\, jazzy evening.Do I get a bit of Aretha? Yes. Do I get a bit of Gladys Knight? Yes.”- Pharrell on The Voice \n\n\n\n	\n Public ticket sales begin May 6\, 2026\, at noon Pacific. Want early access to tickets\, before public sales open? SUMMARY:Calder Quartet 2023
DESCRIPTION:Hailed as “imaginative\, skillful creators” by the New York Times\, the Calder Quartet captivates audiences with its explorations of a broad repertoire\, always striving to fulfill the composer’s vision in their performances. The group’s distinctive artistry is exemplified by the musical curiosity they bring to everything they perform. This concert will feature Ravel’s String Quartet in F Major\, the only one he wrote\, which owes a clear debt to Debussy\, and Schubert’s String Quartet in G Major\, his last and greatest quartet\, with its lyrical ideas and major and minor modes.\nThe players …are particularly good at producing a beautifully rounded and unified sound\, as well as showing a generous sense of musical camaraderie.”- Los Angeles Times \n\n\n	\n \n2023 Featured Composer: Maurice Ravel\n \nFor 2023\, Susan Waterfall’s composer series will feature the innovative and influential Maurice Ravel. It’s something unique that needs to be experienced.” -Ken Bullock\, Berkeley Daily Planet\n \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n Public ticket sales begin May 6\, 2026\, at noon Pacific.
