SUMMARY:WAHID: Dimitris Mahlis\, oud\, and Chris Wabich\, frame drums 2015
DESCRIPTION:The primary instruments for WAHID (meaning one) are oud and frame drums\, each of which has an ancient history\, as found on clay tablets and papyrus scrolls. A duo combination of oud and frames has never been explored or codified\, even though the two instruments have complimented each other in classical ensembles for hundreds of years. \nThe most common reaction by an audience is shock at how complete the group sounds with just two people. It is best understood live because each performance is a one-time event\, never to be repeated. \nChris constructed his own frame drum setup to expand the tuning range to an octave lower than is normally possible. This made the frame drums function as both a rhythmic and harmonic instrument. Chris took traditional technique and applied a modern coordination aspect. He simultaneously plays riq (tambourine) and bass frame drums while adding other percussive voices. This tour de force can either sound like a complete rhythm section\, just percussive accompaniment\, or just the bass. \nWahid…a duet reaching back to mid-Eastern sounds and traditions in order to create a result that’s remarkably full for being so ostensibly spare…due to Dimitris Mahlis’ extraordinary expressiveness on the stringed instrument he wields so adroitly. In his playing and in Chris Wabich’s almost haunting time-keeping\, emphasis\, and undercurrent can be heard again why Ralph Towner and Oregon were so enamored of that region’s musics.” – Mark S. Tucker\, Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange \nBUY TICKETS

SUMMARY:Tierney Sutton: After Blue 2015
DESCRIPTION:Featured wines at this performance \nThe Joni Mitchell Project\, featuring Mark Summer and Serge Merlaud.\nTierney Sutton will present some of the material from her acclaimed album After Blue\, her tribute to Joni Mitchell. Jeff Simon of the Buffalo News called it “a truly great record” and “Tierney Sutton sings Joni Mitchell\, and if you think that even tells a fifth of the story\, forget it. This is not just a jazz singer doing meaningless\, pseudo hip show-off drivel on the music of a wildly idiosyncratic master composer of American pop music…” \nSutton performs a beautiful vocal alchemy with Mitchell’s material.”  Allaboutjazz.com \nNew York Times critic Stephen Holden described Sutton’s voice “as pure and sparkling as mountain spring water.” She is a multiple Grammy nominee as both a recording artist and an arranger. Her original and well-received albums include a rich collection of folk songs\, spirituals and show tunes. Sutton has headlined in recent years at The Hollywood Bowl\, Carnegie Hall\, The Kennedy Center and Jazz at Lincoln Center; she can also be heard on film and television soundtracks. \nWhen not touring\, Sutton is a sought-after educator. Having taught at USC’s Thornton School of Music\, she is currently Vocal Department Head at The Los Angeles College of Music in Pasadena\, where she has created a new curriculum for vocalists of all genres. \nMark Summer is a founding member of Turtle Island Quartet. A graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music\, he has performed with Oakland Symphony\, Oakland Ballet\, and Earplay. As an improviser\, Summer has developed a multi-timbered style which incorporates jazz soloing\, distinctive bass lines\, and percussive techniques. He has been recorded for motion picture soundtracks and has appeared on albums with the likes of Linda Ronstadt\, Toni Childs\, and guitarist Jeff Tamelier of Tower of Power. \nSerge Merlaud studied jazz guitar with Jean-Marie Pallen and classical guitar at the Conservatory in the 11th Arrondissement in Paris with Marie Solies. He has performed with saxophonist Sylvain Beuf\, guitarist N’ Guyen\, and has collaborated with groups including Trio Acoustique\, Cordes Sensibles\, and Quartet with Yves Nahon. Merlaud played on numerous CDs\, including Paris Rio with Idreiss\, Love As It Is with Isabelle Carpentier.
Besides teaching jazz at the ATLA school (for contemporary music) he has led workshops at the Centre des Musiques Didier Lockwood. \nINTERMISSION \nJulian Pollack and Ralph Humphrey have collaborated several times at the Mendocino Music Festival\, playing off each other in ways both subtle and dramatic\, and always with thrilling results. Ralph Humphrey and Trey Henry have worked together extensively over the years in television\, motion pictures\, recordings and live settings. We look forward to the alchemy of these three musicians together on one stage. \nJulian Waterfall Pollack’s jazz improvisation and composition combine a love for today’s popular music with respect for the classical tradition. His album Infinite Playground received five stars from the San Francisco Chronicle. Pollack was featured in the documentary In Good Time\, about Marian McPartland of NPR’s Piano Jazz (on which he appeared at age 18). He has performed at the Blue Note\, Yoshi’s\, Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center\, and at festivals including Montreux and Monterey. He is the recipient of the Level One Gold Prize awarded by the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts. Pollack completed his master’s degree in composition and piano from NYU in 2012. He lives in Brooklyn where he is also a producer\, mixer\, and sound designer in genres ranging from singer-songwriter\, to rap\, R&B\, and jazz.\nRalph Humphrey has been a session player in Los Angeles for nearly 45 years\, performing for TV\, motion pictures and recordings.  Some notable collaborations include Don Ellis\, Frank Zappa\, Wayne Shorter\, The Manhattan Transfer\, Al Jarreau\, Natalie Cole\, Barbara Streisand and Tierney Sutton. Humphrey has been a teacher and clinician for the same period of time\, heading the Drum Department at the Los Angeles College of Music\, where he and others co-author and teach the curricula. Humphrey wrote the publication for drummers Even in the Odds\, and his second method book\, Rhythm by the Numbers\, is due in the fall. Humphrey’s real love continues to be performing live where he can explore and exploit the challenges of the music at hand.\nTrey Henry is a Los Angeles based freelance bassist\, a veteran of the LA music scene for some 25 years. Henry has recorded with Christina Aguilera\, Johnny Cash\, Fergie\, Steve Allen\, Maynard Ferguson\, Natalie Cole\, Linda Ronstadt\, and others. His television appearances include The Simpsons\, American Idol\, the Emmy Awards\, the Academy Awards\, Americas Got Talent and Dancing With The Stars. Motion Picture credits include Land of the Lost\, Rush Hour\, The Lion King and Talladega Nights. Henry has toured and performed with Willie Nelson\, Los Angeles Philharmonic\, Johnny Mathis\, Stevie Wonder\, Henry Mancini\, Hollywood Bowl Orchestra\, Herbie Hancock\, James Taylor\, Aretha Franklin\, Dizzy Gillespie\, and Quincy Jones\, among others.\nCHOOSE SEATS AND BUY

SUMMARY:Cantus 2015
DESCRIPTION:Featured wines at this performance \nThe “intellectually\, emotionally and musically rich” (Star Tribune) nine-member men’s vocal ensemble\, Cantus is known internationally for its trademark warmth and engaging performances of music ranging from the Renaissance to the 21st century. Hailing from Minneapolis-St. Paul and acclaimed as “the premier men’s vocal ensemble in the United States” (Fanfare)\, Cantus performs more than 60 concerts annually nationally and internationally and has released 17 albums on its own self-titled label.  The group is renowned for adventurous programming spanning many periods and genres\, including work commissioned specifically for them. The Washington Post hails the ensemble’s sound as having both “exalting finesse” and “expressive power.” \nThe Mendocino performance will close out the Cantus 2014-15 season. At the Festival\, Cantus will perform their program “Anthem\,” which explores the traditions and customs of singing throughout the world with specific emphasis on when and why people sing together. “Anthems are an expression of identity and create a way for communities to show support for a cause\, belief\, a heritage\, or even a sports team\,” says Cantus tenor Aaron Humble. “If you have once sung a song in a group\, that music forever after will conjure the emotions of that moment for you: pride\, identity\, unity.” The program includes songs from various cultures and traditions asking the question: When we gather together\, how does singing help us celebrate\, help us inspire\, or help us heal? Anthem features works ranging from the Hebrew Burial Kaddish to the African American work song\, “Rainbow ‘Round my Shoulder\,” to works by Kodály\, Holst\, Verdi\, Janáček and Tallis. Two new pieces commissioned for the program include “When We Sing” by Rosephanye Powell \, inspired by the recent findings that people’s heartbeats start to synch when they sing together; and an arrangement of “How Can I Keep From Singing” from Stephen Caricciola\, who previously arranged “Simple Gifts” for the group. \nListening to Cantus\, you understand that there’s something about a group of people singing that touches the listener on a very human level.” –NPR \nCHOOSE SEATS AND BUY \n\n\n\nCHOOSE SEATS AND BUY

It’s about farmers and ranchers\, and the land and the water. It’s about the idea of sharing sustenance with those you care about in the context of a meal. It’s about connecting with the rich cultural history that has been passed on to us through the foods we eat.” She believes that eating is more than supplying our bodies with fuel\, though not discounting the value of healthy foods. Instead\, eating feeds our souls as well as our bodies. Food provides a context for our history\, our lives and our relationships.”\n\nWines by Handley Cellars\nHandley Cellars is a small family-owned Mendocino County winery producing around 12\,000 cases a year. “At Handley Cellars\, we firmly believe in a conscious and conscientious approach to farming and winemaking. We purchase grapes from small\, local\, family growers\, and whenever possible\, we select fruit that is farmed organically. Our winemaking philosophy is to let the distinctive qualities of each vineyard shine through. Working with carefully tended\, exceptional sites\, we strive to create wines which faithfully reflect the unique characteristics of the vineyards and viticultural region\, focusing on our appellation of Anderson Valley. From start to finish\, we are mindful of our impact on our rural valley\, and the implications of our farming and wine making choices for future generations.”\n\nSparkling Wines by Signal Ridge\nThe Signal Ridge Vineyard is the highest altitude vineyard in all of Mendocino\, Sonoma and Napa counties. This challenging ridgetop terroir produces unique\, high end\, singular fruit. The inaugural release of SRV Brut Sparkling Wine\, made in the méthode traditionnelle\, is a pale lemon color\, its bubbles crowning the rim of each glass like a bracelet of diamonds. It offers aromas of autumn harvest\, apples and bread dough rising on the hearth. Hints of apple pie and marzipan tarry alongside the crisp minerality that lingers on the palate. Delightful to sip on its own or paired with a sunset.\n\n\n \nGenerously Sponsored by Pamela Hudson Real Estate\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\nClick Here to Reserve Online Now
