SUMMARY:Peer-to-Peer Jazz Workshop 2013
DESCRIPTION:Saturday July 20\, 10:00 AM\nMatheson Theater\n“When you hear how great these young kids play\, you know the future of our music is in good hands.” – Thelonius Monk\, Jr. (monkinstitute.org) \nMiles Berry\, 18\, New Orleans Center for Creative Arts – tenor saxophone\nJoel Ross\, 17\, Chicago High School for the Arts – vibes\nNick Saia\, 17\, LaGuardia High School of Music & Art\, NYC – guitar\nJames Francies\, 17\, High School for the Performing & Visual Arts\, Houston – piano\nJose Albizu\, 17\, New World School of the Arts\, Miami – bass\nMichael Mitchell\, 18\, Booker T. The Program offers these students the opportunity to participate in a pre-conservatory\, highly specialized performance-based jazz curriculum\, study with some of the world’s most eminent jazz artists and educators\, perform in a jazz combo composed of their peers\, and prepare for entry into the country’s most distinguished conservatories and university schools of music. Included is instruction in Jazz Improvisation\, Theory\, Composition\, History\, and Styles and Analysis. The Institute works with each school in developing jazz curricula and instructional methodology; provides ongoing private and group instruction with Institute teaching staff and visiting artists and educators; offers special residences with jazz masters; and arranges high-profile performance opportunities for the student ensembles. \nThe best of the best were selected to participate in the Institute’s 2013 Peer-to-Peer Jazz Education Program. Through this national initiative\, the Institute invites jazz combos comprising music students from the country’s leading public performing arts high schools to participate in weeklong peer-to-peer jazz informance tours. The young musicians gain invaluable performance experience playing alongside internationally acclaimed artists. At the same time\, they help educate young audiences in public schools throughout the United States about America’s indigenous musical art form. The students play and talk about jazz\, teaching their peers not only about the music and its rich history\, but also about the deeply held American values it represents: teamwork\, unity with ethnic diversity\, democracy\, and the vital importance of really listening to one another. \nThelonious Monk Institute National Performing Arts High School Jazz Program Participants \nArts High School\, Newark\, NJ\nBooker T. SUMMARY:Julian Pollack Trio\, Hot Club of San Francisco 2013
DESCRIPTION:Julian Pollack Trio \nFrom jazz standards to American folk melodies to contemporary indie rock songs to Pollack’s own compositions\, the Trio’s aim is music “beautiful\, moving\, yet modern\,” according to Julian Waterfall Pollack (“…emerging\, young\, and poised…a pianist with an earnest air” – The New York Times). “Old jazz songs\, American folk melodies\, and rock tunes can create a lot of feeling and vibe with very simple materials. We want to utilize those materials and convey the sentiments of those styles…and then improvise.” \nwww.julianpollackmusic.com \nHot Club of San Francisco \nOpening the show\, Americas finest gypsy swing band in the style of Django Reinhardt & Stephane Grappelli will have you tapping your feet to Le Jazz Hot or Jazz manouche\, as its called in its birthplace\, France. It’s Gypsy jazz\, mysterious rhythms at once sophisticated and flamboyant\, romantic and melancholy. The quintet—named for Reinhardt’s famous Quintet of the Hot Club of France—is led by the godfather of American gypsy jazz\, guitarist Paul Mehling. \nwww.HCSF.com \nClick for Ticketing

SUMMARY:POCO Benefit for MMF 2013
DESCRIPTION:POCO is “All Fired Up” with their new album of that name\, and plans to rock their trademark blazing instrumentals and soaring harmonies at a fabulous benefit concert made possible by the generosity of an anonymous POCO fan. \nFor 45 years\, POCO has been making the classic country rock sound that they helped found in the late sixties. They have continued creating their trademark harmonies and never stopped touring over the years despite lineup changes that make POCO a storied source for other bands. \nSinger-songwriter Rusty Young\, member of the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame\, is the only original member in the band\, and he remains the leader and front man on stage. “History shows that POCO has always had great musicians in the band\, and it’s no different today\,” says Young. The lineup includes drummer George Lawrence and bassist-songwriter Jack Sundrud\, who sometimes takes lead vocals. The band’s newest member\, Nashville veteran multi-instrumentalist Michael Webb\, who joined the band on vocals\, guitars\, and mandolin\, has added accordion accents and keyboard to the band’s latest mix. \n“There is no manual for a 45-year-old rock band” –drummer George Lawrence. \nThe band’s longevity is due to some key ingredients: loving what they do; continuing to evolve and refine their sound while staying true to their roots; and having an ardent fan base that considers the music a soundtrack to their lives. Their new album\, “All Fired Up\,” — the band’s first studio release in eleven years—has earned high praise from fans and critics alike. \nRusty Young – vocals\, guitar\, slide\, pedal steel\nJack Sundrud – bass\, guitar\, vocals\nGeorge Lawrence – drums\, percussion\nMichael Webb – vocals\, guitar\, keyboards\, mandolin\, accordion\nGeneral Admission (open seating) and Reserved Seating tickets are available for this event.
