SUMMARY:Matt Andersen\, John Németh: Blues Double Bill 2015
DESCRIPTION:Featured wines at this performance Matt Andersen’s narrative driven writing cuts through the soul\, blending blues and folk\, delivered in total honesty. He takes listeners on a ride with his diverse musical styles\, skilled guitar work and over-the-top showmanship. Matt’s intimate\, high energy performances have captivated audiences from Canada\, to the U.S.\, to Australia and the U.K.\, in both small clubs and festivals. \nI’m not trying to change anyone’s life in a big way but I love it when listeners really get involved in the music. When people get involved in makes it a really great night – for everyone.” \nJohn Németh’s recently released fourth album\, Memphis Grease\, embodies everything that sets this artist apart from the revivalist pack: it’s innovative and unique while epitomizing the absolute best of the genre. It’s a deeply forged amalgamation of scorching harmonica-driven blues and sweet blue-eyed soul ala the Box Tops or Roy Head.  The album title itself it evocative of Németh’s journey to Memphis\, taking the Bay Area’s “Oakland Grease” along to mix with the intuitiveness that flows between him and the Memphis based Bo-Keys. \nCHOOSE SEATS AND BUY

SUMMARY:Festival Orchestra featuring Frederica von Stade 2015
DESCRIPTION:Featured wines this performance \nThis concert\, the fourth in the Mozart in Mendocino series\, contains some of the greatest music ever written\, including the Overture from Abduction from the Seraglio K. 384\, and Mozart’s last symphony\, the Jupiter K. 551. Frederica von Stade will sing her favorite arias from Marriage of Figaro\, Don Giovanni and Cosi fan tutte\, joined by Melissa Angulo\, soprano and Jeremiah Smith\, bass-baritone. Mozart fans will not want to miss this opportunity to hear the music of Mozart presented with elegance and grace. \nVon Stade can do no wrong. Her singing was polished yet warm\, like china under whose thin glaze are painted scenes of extraordinary delicacy. One heard dainty\, loving anticipation and the solitary soul. It was something close to ecstasy.” – New York Newsday \nIn lieu of a fee for her appearance\, Frederica von Stade has requested the Festival make a donation to the Young Musicians Choral Orchestra. The Festival gratefully acknowledges Janet Morris and Fred Martin for generously underwriting this donation. \n\nCHOOSE SEATS AND BUY \n\nMozart in Mendocino\, a Four-Part Series\nThis Susan Waterfall Production is a four-day exploration of the lesser-known aspects of Mozart’s life and music\, with examinations of his social and cultural context\, both silly and serious. Why was Punch the drink of the Enlightenment? How did Mozart’s bawdy brand of family humor serve to balance his deeply introspective bouts of composing? A coda to the Mozart festivities will be Spencer Myer’s performance of Piano Concerto No. 21 K. 467 with the Festival Orchestra. People came away from last year’s Bachfest saying\, “I thought I knew all about Bach\, but I learned so many fascinating details”. Now on to Mozart! \n“Waterfall’s productions—which in the past have included such diverse themes as Scandalous Music! Satie\, Debussy\, Ravel and Stravinsky; Bartok’s Women; and Degenerate Music\, the modern music of Germany (and the German émigré community) during the Weimar Republic\, the Nazi era and World War II—always present exciting\, absorbing playing of great music\, but are also rare\, distinctive examples of what can be called music education\, though they’re more conversational\, truly a sharing of perspective\, interest\, anecdote … Her manner is like a friend’s turning at a dinner table to answer a question with expert information and wit. There’s a sense of immediacy to her delivery\, weaving in and out of the playing\, that knits together different perspectives from the past two and a half centuries into an intimately conceived prescience\, a present awareness of this heritage. It’s something unique that needs to be experienced.” Ken Bullock\, Berkeley Daily Planet \n\nCHOOSE SEATS AND BUY

SUMMARY:Mozart at Court and Outdoors 2015
DESCRIPTION:Featuring the Festival Chamber Players\nMany of Mozart’s chamber works were composed for aristocratic salons or outdoor entertainment. The Festival Chamber Players will perform two of Mozart’s most serious and introspective masterpieces for these settings. Wind octets usually were light outdoor music for royal parties\, but in K. 388 Mozart used the instrumental combination to explore the pathos and drama of the key of C minor.  The G minor Viola Quintet (K. 516) was written at the time of Mozart’s father’s final illness. Mozart’s peaking creative powers enabled him to unify this emotionally turbulent four movement work\, just as his own world was falling apart.\nBUY TICKETS\n\n	\n \nMozart in Mendocino\, a Four-Part Series\nThis Susan Waterfall production is a four-day exploration of the lesser-known aspects of Mozart’s life and music\, with examinations of his social and cultural context\, both silly and serious. People came away from last year’s Bachfest saying\, “I thought I knew all about Bach\, but I learned so many fascinating details.” Now on to Mozart! \nSusan Waterfall’s production of the Mozart in Mendocino series is generously sponsored by Thomas Safran. “Waterfall’s productions—which in the past have included such diverse themes as Scandalous Music! It’s something unique that needs to be experienced.” Ken Bullock\, Berkeley Daily Planet \n \n	\n\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS

Their original and exciting sound has generated broad appeal and rave reviews. \nOne of the finest bands in America right now\, like a folk-based U2.” – San Diego Troubadour \nCollectively they create multihued sonic and emotional tapestries\, recalling the artful romanticism of Jane Siberry\, the rich folk harmonies of the Indigo Girls and the percolating soulfulness of Joy of Cooking.” – San Francisco Chronicle \nBlame Sally has one of the most powerful word-of-mouth success stories I’ve heard in recent years. SUMMARY:Alex de Grassi 2015
DESCRIPTION:Grammy-nominated guitarist Alex de Grassi has influenced a whole generation of guitarists with his compositions\, recordings and performances for solo guitar. The Wall Street Journal calls his playing “flawless\,” and New York Guitar Festival director David Spelman hails him as “a treasure.” Having performed previously at the Festival\, he returns to perform his original compositions and unique arrangements—from Hendrix to Gershwin—as well as new compositions for Harp Guitar.  His long-running Summer Intensive Guitar Workshop\, held here on the coast\, runs concurrently with the Festival\, and this year he will be joined on stage by his students to perform a guitar ensemble composition he has composed for the occasion. \nAlex de Grassi\, both Grammy and Indie award nominee\, is an intriguing artist whose mastery of acoustic finger-picking styles includes a variety of techniques and ethnic influences. With trumpet as his first instrument\, he discovered guitar at age thirteen and never looked back. Although primarily self-taught\, de Grassi studied with noted teacher Bill Thrasher. His background also includes a degree in Urban Geography from UC Berkeley and performing as a street artist in London. \nDe Grassi has performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival\, Carnegie Hall\, Belfast International Festival\, Telluride and Wolftrap. He has taught at the National Summer Guitar Workshop and the Milwaukee Conservatory of Music\, among others\, and has his own workshop series. The musician was the subject of a PBS concert/interview television show\, “Alex de Grassi: The Artist’s Profile.” \nBUY TICKETS

SUMMARY:WAHID: Dimitris Mahlis\, oud\, and Chris Wabich\, frame drums 2015
DESCRIPTION:The primary instruments for WAHID (meaning one) are oud and frame drums\, each of which has an ancient history\, as found on clay tablets and papyrus scrolls. A duo combination of oud and frames has never been explored or codified\, even though the two instruments have complimented each other in classical ensembles for hundreds of years. \nThe most common reaction by an audience is shock at how complete the group sounds with just two people. It is best understood live because each performance is a one-time event\, never to be repeated. \nChris constructed his own frame drum setup to expand the tuning range to an octave lower than is normally possible. This made the frame drums function as both a rhythmic and harmonic instrument. Chris took traditional technique and applied a modern coordination aspect. He simultaneously plays riq (tambourine) and bass frame drums while adding other percussive voices. This tour de force can either sound like a complete rhythm section\, just percussive accompaniment\, or just the bass. \nWahid…a duet reaching back to mid-Eastern sounds and traditions in order to create a result that’s remarkably full for being so ostensibly spare…due to Dimitris Mahlis’ extraordinary expressiveness on the stringed instrument he wields so adroitly. In his playing and in Chris Wabich’s almost haunting time-keeping\, emphasis\, and undercurrent can be heard again why Ralph Towner and Oregon were so enamored of that region’s musics.” – Mark S. Tucker\, Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange \nBUY TICKETS

SUMMARY:Tierney Sutton: After Blue 2015
DESCRIPTION:Featured wines at this performance \nThe Joni Mitchell Project\, featuring Mark Summer and Serge Merlaud.\nTierney Sutton will present some of the material from her acclaimed album After Blue\, her tribute to Joni Mitchell. Jeff Simon of the Buffalo News called it “a truly great record” and “Tierney Sutton sings Joni Mitchell\, and if you think that even tells a fifth of the story\, forget it. This is not just a jazz singer doing meaningless\, pseudo hip show-off drivel on the music of a wildly idiosyncratic master composer of American pop music…” \nSutton performs a beautiful vocal alchemy with Mitchell’s material.”  Allaboutjazz.com \nNew York Times critic Stephen Holden described Sutton’s voice “as pure and sparkling as mountain spring water.” She is a multiple Grammy nominee as both a recording artist and an arranger. Her original and well-received albums include a rich collection of folk songs\, spirituals and show tunes. Sutton has headlined in recent years at The Hollywood Bowl\, Carnegie Hall\, The Kennedy Center and Jazz at Lincoln Center; she can also be heard on film and television soundtracks. \nWhen not touring\, Sutton is a sought-after educator. Having taught at USC’s Thornton School of Music\, she is currently Vocal Department Head at The Los Angeles College of Music in Pasadena\, where she has created a new curriculum for vocalists of all genres. \nMark Summer is a founding member of Turtle Island Quartet. A graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music\, he has performed with Oakland Symphony\, Oakland Ballet\, and Earplay. As an improviser\, Summer has developed a multi-timbered style which incorporates jazz soloing\, distinctive bass lines\, and percussive techniques. He has been recorded for motion picture soundtracks and has appeared on albums with the likes of Linda Ronstadt\, Toni Childs\, and guitarist Jeff Tamelier of Tower of Power. \nSerge Merlaud studied jazz guitar with Jean-Marie Pallen and classical guitar at the Conservatory in the 11th Arrondissement in Paris with Marie Solies. He has performed with saxophonist Sylvain Beuf\, guitarist N’ Guyen\, and has collaborated with groups including Trio Acoustique\, Cordes Sensibles\, and Quartet with Yves Nahon. Merlaud played on numerous CDs\, including Paris Rio with Idreiss\, Love As It Is with Isabelle Carpentier.
Besides teaching jazz at the ATLA school (for contemporary music) he has led workshops at the Centre des Musiques Didier Lockwood. \nINTERMISSION \nJulian Pollack and Ralph Humphrey have collaborated several times at the Mendocino Music Festival\, playing off each other in ways both subtle and dramatic\, and always with thrilling results. Ralph Humphrey and Trey Henry have worked together extensively over the years in television\, motion pictures\, recordings and live settings. We look forward to the alchemy of these three musicians together on one stage. \nJulian Waterfall Pollack’s jazz improvisation and composition combine a love for today’s popular music with respect for the classical tradition. His album Infinite Playground received five stars from the San Francisco Chronicle. Pollack was featured in the documentary In Good Time\, about Marian McPartland of NPR’s Piano Jazz (on which he appeared at age 18). He has performed at the Blue Note\, Yoshi’s\, Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center\, and at festivals including Montreux and Monterey. He is the recipient of the Level One Gold Prize awarded by the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts. Pollack completed his master’s degree in composition and piano from NYU in 2012. He lives in Brooklyn where he is also a producer\, mixer\, and sound designer in genres ranging from singer-songwriter\, to rap\, R&B\, and jazz.\nRalph Humphrey has been a session player in Los Angeles for nearly 45 years\, performing for TV\, motion pictures and recordings.  Some notable collaborations include Don Ellis\, Frank Zappa\, Wayne Shorter\, The Manhattan Transfer\, Al Jarreau\, Natalie Cole\, Barbara Streisand and Tierney Sutton. Humphrey has been a teacher and clinician for the same period of time\, heading the Drum Department at the Los Angeles College of Music\, where he and others co-author and teach the curricula. Humphrey wrote the publication for drummers Even in the Odds\, and his second method book\, Rhythm by the Numbers\, is due in the fall. Humphrey’s real love continues to be performing live where he can explore and exploit the challenges of the music at hand.\nTrey Henry is a Los Angeles based freelance bassist\, a veteran of the LA music scene for some 25 years. Henry has recorded with Christina Aguilera\, Johnny Cash\, Fergie\, Steve Allen\, Maynard Ferguson\, Natalie Cole\, Linda Ronstadt\, and others. His television appearances include The Simpsons\, American Idol\, the Emmy Awards\, the Academy Awards\, Americas Got Talent and Dancing With The Stars. Motion Picture credits include Land of the Lost\, Rush Hour\, The Lion King and Talladega Nights. Henry has toured and performed with Willie Nelson\, Los Angeles Philharmonic\, Johnny Mathis\, Stevie Wonder\, Henry Mancini\, Hollywood Bowl Orchestra\, Herbie Hancock\, James Taylor\, Aretha Franklin\, Dizzy Gillespie\, and Quincy Jones\, among others.\nCHOOSE SEATS AND BUY
