SUMMARY:Festival Orchestra 4 2024
DESCRIPTION:The final concert offers comfort and hope in difficult times. Mozart’s Symphony No. 40\, sometimes referred to as the “Great G minor symphony” to distinguish it from No. 25\, the only other symphony he wrote in a minor key. It is one of his last works\, showing him at his most introspective and thoughtful. The magnificent Brahms Requiem features the Festival Chorus and soloists. Ein Deutsches Requiem is so named because Brahms used text from the German Lutheran Bible instead of the expected Roman Catholic Latin lyrics in his attempt to show the mercy of God\, rather than his judgment\, and to give consolation to those left behind. Soloists Carrie Hennessey\, soprano\, and Robert Sims\, baritone.\nCarrie Hennessey\, soprano \nRobert Sims\, baritone \n\n\n	\n Public ticket sales begin May 6\, 2026\, at noon Pacific. SUMMARY:Damn Tall Buildings
DESCRIPTION:In their early days\, Brooklyn-based Damn Tall Buildings didn’t rehearse; they busked. Now\, whether live or on record\, the band still radiates the energy of a ragtag crew of music students playing bluegrass on the street. But anchoring that energy are their instrumental chops\, their strong songwriting\, and their varied influences that stretch beyond bluegrass\, even beyond American roots music altogether. \nThink of: The Carter Family for the millennial generation. Old Crow Medicine Show meets Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros meets Flatt & Scruggs meets Nickel Creek\, with a dash of Avett Brothers and a sprinkle of Johnny Cash. The band coined the term “guerrilla roots” to describe its sound\, which draws on early-20th-century Americana/bluegrass music\, “repurposed for a modern audience.”- The Boston Globe \n\n\n\n\n	\n Public ticket sales begin May 6\, 2026\, at noon Pacific. SUMMARY:Fauré: Indian Summer
DESCRIPTION:Faure wrote some of his most astonishing music in his late seventies\, when he was becoming increasingly deaf. Susan Waterfall will accompany mezzo-soprano Silvie Jensen in Le jardin clos\, Stephen Harrison\, cello\, and Daniel Lockert\, piano\, will play the Cello Sonata No. 2 in G minor. The program will conclude with the Ives Quartet playing the Piano Quintet No. 2 in C minor: Hrabba Atladottir\, violin; Sam Weiser\, violin; Susan Freier\, viola; Stephen Harrison\, cello; and Keisuke Nakagoshi\, piano. \n\n \n \n \n \n Silvie Jensen\, mezzo-soprano\n \n \n \n Susan Waterfall\, piano\n \n \n \n Daniel Lockert\, piano\n \n \n \n Keisuke Nakagoshi\, piano\n \n \n \n \n \n Hrabba Altadottir\, violin\n \n \n \n Sam Weiser\, violin\n \n \n \n Susan Freier\, viola\n \n \n \n Stephen Harrison\, cello\n \n \n \n\n\n\n	\n \n2024 Featured Composer: Gabriel Fauré\n \nFor 2024\, Susan Waterfall’s composer series will feature the innovative and influential Gabriel Fauré. Immerse yourself in his world and his music\, and understand how his music evolved over his lifetime with narrated chamber recitals featuring exciting guest artists\, and various other settings of Fauré’s work across the Festival. \nExplore the Series \nWaterfall’s productions always present exciting\, absorbing playing of great music\, but are also rare\, distinctive examples of what can be called music education\, though they’re more conversational\, truly a sharing of perspective\, interest\, anecdote. There’s a sense of immediacy to her delivery\, weaving in and out of the playing\, an intimately conceived present awareness of this heritage. It’s something unique that needs to be experienced.” -Ken Bullock\, Berkeley Daily Planet\n \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n	\n \nMusic critic Alex Ross describes the music of Fauré\, Proust’s favorite composer\, as “a bittersweet\, complicated happiness.” Gabriel Fauré’s songs and chamber music conjure the essence of Belle Epoque Paris with its unmatched assemblage of Symbolist and Impressionist artists. His music is the counterpart of gorgeous pre-Raphaelite imagery and the shapely lines of Art Nouveau. Throughout a life enriched by the salons\, and by the beautiful and talented women of his era\, Fauré created an intimate and subtle art\, a welcome antidote to today’s world. The sensuality and elan of Fauré’s music are balanced by its purity and ineffable beauty. \nFauré wrote some of his most astonishing music in his late seventies\, music strangely untouched by the Great War and its aftermath. This introspective and deeply expressive music evolved\, like late Beethoven\, from the isolation brought on by Fauré’s increasing deafness. \nWith a biographical film and three programs displaying his long and productive life you will learn all about this fascinating composer and feast in his sumptuous world. With this concert series and film\, Susan Waterfall completes her exploration of the great triumvirate of composers who created the glorious efflorescence of late 19th and early 20th century French music. \n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n Public ticket sales begin May 6\, 2026\, at noon Pacific. SUMMARY:Rose's Pawn Shop
DESCRIPTION:With its fusion of bluegrass instrumentation and folk-rock amplification\, Rose’s Pawn Shop has spent the better part of two decades perfecting a sound that’s as diverse as the band’s native Los Angeles. Their past releases offer modern day roots music shot through with electric guitar\, fiddle\, raw percussive stomp\, and stacked vocal harmonies. It’s a sound for the heart as well as the heartland. “We’ve always resonated with people who live in remote communities and far-flung locations\,” says frontman Paul Givant. “We spend a lot of our time playing mountain towns like Madrid\, New Mexico\, connecting to the people who\, like us\, are out there searching for something.”\nIn their recent recording\, Punch-Drunk Life\, the group has harnessed the crucial elements of their sound—deft picking\, smooth harmonies\, and terrific songwriting—to arrive at this uplifting effort\, one of the more joyous recordings in recent memory.”- Glide Magazine \n\n\n\n\n	\n Public ticket sales begin May 6\, 2026\, at noon Pacific. SUMMARY:Festival Orchestra 2: Così fan tutte
DESCRIPTION:Mozart’s comic masterpiece shows us what can happen when two sisters and their suitors are tested by a manipulative friend\, Don Alfonso. The men accept his wager that their brides-to-be will remain faithful to them\, and orchestrate a plot to test that hypothesis: they will be “called away to war\,” but will in reality disguise themselves and attempt to woo each other’s fiancées. What could go wrong? Written at the height of Mozart’s musical prowess\, it is a testament to his wit and skill. If you like to have a laugh at the theatre\, you’ll love this opera. \nGuest Conductor Ryan Murray\n \n\n \n \n \n \n Bianca Orsi\, soprano\, as Despina\n \n \n \n Megan Potter\, mezzo-soprano\, as Dorabella\n \n \n \n Liisa Dávila\, soprano\, as Norina\n \n \n \n Matthew Peterson\, baritone\, as Dr. Malatesta\n \n \n \n Salvatore Atti\, tenor\, as Ernesto\n \n \n \n Matthew Miksak\, bass\, as Don Alfonso\n \n \n \n\n\n\n	\n Public ticket sales begin May 6\, 2026\, at noon Pacific. SUMMARY:Kim Nalley\, with Tammy Lynne Hall
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Kim Nalley has been a fixture in the San Francisco Bay Area—and here in Mendocino as well—as a quality soulful jazz and blues singer\, very much in the tradition of the best vocalists of the 1940s and ‘50s. Always exciting to hear\, she can go from operatic to gritty blues on a dime\, with projection that can whisper a ballad and fill a room without a mic\, sporting a sensational sense of humor to boot. Nalley keeps the style alive without copying any of her predecessors\, singing vintage songs in her own way and riveting audiences with blistering scat solos that swing with intensity. \nGOD\, CAN THIS WOMAN SING! It’s as if a vocalist from the great post-war blues and jazz combos had been transported to the end of the century.”- Blues Access Magazine \nTammy Lynne Hall is one of the most sought-after accompanists in the world\, performing with Rhiannon (Alive!)\, Barbara Dane\, Queen Esther\, the Supreme Mary Wilson\, Regina Carter\, Linda Tillery and the Cultural Heritage Choir\, Melba Moore\, Miki Howard\, Rhonda Benin\, Darlene Love\, Ernestine Anderson\, Kim Nalley\, Kenny Washington\, and the late Etta Jones. \n\n\n\n\n	\n Public ticket sales begin May 6\, 2026\, at noon Pacific.
