SUMMARY:Calder Quartet
DESCRIPTION:“Few string quartets can command the stage like the Calder Quartet\,” according to The Washington Post. The extraordinary ensemble is just as renowned for its expert\, empathetic readings of core repertoire as it is for its thrilling commitment to new and unexpected programming. Returning to the Festival for the 12th year\, the Los Angeles-based musicians are sure to delight with their mastery and imagination. \nThe Calder’s Beethoven was full of flaring drama\, furrowed brows and quiet intensity. But\, with the tightest of ensemble playing and well-judged balancing of instrumental voices\, the piece retained its classical integrity and polished finish.”- Washington Post \nI’ve written before that every time I hear the Calder\, the ensemble seems to have reached a new level. That remains true\, and now only the stars are the limit\, as the Calder takes its place as one of America’s most satisfying—and most enterprising—quartets.”- Mark Swed\, Los Angeles Times \nThe Calder Quartet played the most insightful and moving performance of Thomas Adès’s Arcadiana I’ve ever heard.”- Tom Service\, The Guardian UK \nPerformances like these—freshly rethought\, impeccably played—do more than provide enjoyable listening. They reveal hidden dimensions\, renew a bond with the composer\, and justify the continuance of familiar works in the repertory.”- Boston Globe \n\n\n\n\n	\n Public ticket sales begin May 6\, 2026\, at noon Pacific. SUMMARY:Beethoven Chamber 2
DESCRIPTION:In what has become something of a Festival tradition\, Julian Pollack will join Susan Waterfall on one piano for the Sonata for Piano 4 Hands in D Major\, Op. 6\, a two-movement exercise in pianistic flair. Beethoven wrote beautifully balanced works for strings and piano\, and this concert will celebrate that mastery. Sam Weiser will be accompanied by Carolyn Steinbuck on the Sonata for Violin and Piano in F Major\, “Spring.” Since its debut in 1811\, the “Archduke Trio\,” for violin\, cello\, and piano\, has been considered one of his masterpieces\, and Terrie Baune\, Stephen Harrison\, and Elizabeth Dorman will demonstrate why. Silvie Jensen will sing some of Beethoven’s songs and arias\, accompanied by Kevin Korth on piano\, proving that Beethoven wrote brilliantly for singers too.\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n	\n Public ticket sales begin May 6\, 2026\, at noon Pacific. SUMMARY:Evie Ladin and Keith Terry
DESCRIPTION:The polyrhythmic heat of Evie Ladin’s clawhammer banjo\, resonant voice\, real stories\, and rhythmic dance have been heard from A Prairie Home Companion to Lincoln Center\, Celtic Connections to Hardly Strictly Bluegrass\, Brazil to Bali. A prolific creator and gracious facilitator\, Ladin grew up steeped in traditional folk music/dance throughout the East Coast. She brings a syncretic vision to new work while holding fast to her roots.\nLadin sings and plays infectious clawhammer banjo\, while Terry is a master percussionist. It was Appalachian string band music pared to the absolute minimum of accompaniment\, but packed with an orchestra’s worth of rhythm.”- Music City Roots\, Nashville \nShe can write\, she can sing\, and she pulls back from the saccharine brink with wit – a sharp intelligence.”- Grant Alden\, No Depression \nMr. Terry in action is like visiting an anatomical carnival\, where hands\, feet\, fingers\, engage in a musical ballet.”- Wall Street Journal \nYou don’t often hear words like “traditional\,” and “authentic” paired with “innovative” and “unique\,” but Evie Ladin & Keith Terry have brought them together brilliantly\, and the result is truly a high point in new old-time music.”- FOLKWORKS\, Los Angeles \n(An) arrestingly fun show\, bursting with talent.. every song\, dance solo\, and mid-number banjo breakdown was following by vigorous clapping and hollers.- Smile Politely\, Champaign-Urbana \n\n\n\n\n	\n Public ticket sales begin May 6\, 2026\, at noon Pacific. SUMMARY:Festival Orchestra 3\, with Francesco Lecce-Chong\, Conductor; Mio Imai\, violin
DESCRIPTION:Shuying Li’s Purple Mountains overture will begin an evening of graceful lyricism and energetic rhythms. Amazing young violinist Mio Imai will perform Samuel Barber’s esteemed Violin Concerto. In her hands\, elegant solo melodies will soar and mesh with lush orchestral textures. Beethoven’s 6th Symphony\, the “Pastoral Symphony\,” is one of his few pieces with explicitly programmatic content\, narrating in five movements a visit to the countryside. Written at the same time as his fateful and heroic 5th Symphony\, it strikes a very different note\, transporting listeners to a babbling brook with singing birds and dancing peasants. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n	\n Public ticket sales begin May 6\, 2026\, at noon Pacific. SUMMARY:Tom Rush
DESCRIPTION:Tom Rush is a gifted musician and performer whose shows offer a musical journey into the tradition and spectrum of what music has been\, can be\, and will become. His distinctive guitar style\, wry humor\, and warm\, expressive voice have made him a legend to audiences around the world. His shows are filled with the laughter of terrific story-telling\, the sweet melancholy of ballads\, and the passion of gritty blues. Rush’s impact on the American music scene has been profound\, helping shape the folk revival in the ‘60s and the renaissance of the ‘80s and ‘90s.\nThe Kennedy Center Concert Hall was packed and the stage crowded with musicians and friends Saturday night. Rush and his fellow performers not only celebrated the past and the traditions that link one generation of musicians to the next\, but they also made the future for acoustic music look bright indeed. Evocative… sensitive… imaginative… gorgeous… breathtaking… compelling. The music cast an intimate spell.”- Mike Joyce\, The Washington Post \n\n\n\n\n\n	\n Public ticket sales begin May 6\, 2026\, at noon Pacific. A musical genius is born into circumstances that nourish his talent\, but starve him emotionally. He has an innate\, unwavering desire to cure suffering with music that expresses a more perfect world. More than 250 years later\, we are drawn again to Beethoven’s phenomenal musical imagination\, compassion\, and charismatic vision to find meaning and inspiration. Immerse yourself in his world and his music\, and understand how his music evolved over his lifetime\, with a documentary film\, narrated chamber recitals featuring exciting guest artists\, and various other settings of Beethoven’s work across the Festival. \nWaterfall’s productions always present exciting\, absorbing playing of great music\, but are also rare\, distinctive examples of what can be called music education\, though they’re more conversational\, truly a sharing of perspective\, interest\, anecdote. There’s a sense of immediacy to her delivery\, weaving in and out of the playing\, an intimately conceived present awareness of this heritage. It’s something unique that needs to be experienced.” -Ken Bullock\, Berkeley Daily Planet\n \nExplore the Series \n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n	\n \nBeethoven\, Now!\, curated by Susan Waterfall\, includes her documentary film on his life and music\, and performances of seventeen of his works spread over nine symphony and chamber concerts.
