SUMMARY:Maurizio! The Life and Times of Maurice Ravel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the exciting premiere of Susan Waterfall’s new film Maurizio! The Life and Times of Maurice Ravel. Immerse yourself in the composer’s world\, and enhance your experience of the many Ravel offerings in this summer’s Festival: the Festival Orchestra’s Daphnis et Chloé Suite No. 2; the Calder’s performance of his String Quartet in F Major\, the only one he wrote; Jeffrey LaDeur and Kindra Scharich’s performance of his song cycles\, Histoires Naturelles and Deux épigrammes de Clément Marot and his Valses nobles et sentimentales for piano; and the two narrated chamber music concerts The Lure of the Exotic and The Attraction of Modernism. \nYou’ve heard music by Ravel and probably loved it. You’ve heard random gossip about this secretive composer. Now’s your chance to experience Ravel’s life and music in its historic context. With contemporary art and photographs\, and 26 musical excerpts\, you’ll get an overview of a composer whose creative life spanned the voluptuous conclusion of the Belle Epoque\, the trauma of the First World War\, and the new paths to modernism that emerged in the 20’s and 30’s. 85 years after his death\, nosy biographers are still trying to understand Ravel’s mysterious private life\, as inscrutable as his music is irresistible. \nA Q&A will follow the screening. Thanks to Deborah Whigham and Gary Ratway for sponsoring this screening. \nWritten and directed by Susan Waterfall.\nArt and photograph collection by Mina Cohen.\nFilmed and edited by Julian Pollack. \nGET TICKETS\n\n\n	\n \n2023 Featured Composer: Maurice Ravel\n \nFor 2023\, Susan Waterfall’s composer series will feature the innovative and influential Maurice Ravel. Immerse yourself in his world and his music\, and understand how his music evolved over his lifetime with narrated chamber recitals featuring exciting guest artists\, and various other settings of Ravel’s work across the Festival. \nExplore the Series \nWaterfall’s productions always present exciting\, absorbing playing of great music\, but are also rare\, distinctive examples of what can be called music education\, though they’re more conversational\, truly a sharing of perspective\, interest\, anecdote. There’s a sense of immediacy to her delivery\, weaving in and out of the playing\, an intimately conceived present awareness of this heritage. It’s something unique that needs to be experienced.” -Ken Bullock\, Berkeley Daily Planet

SUMMARY:Festival Chorale: A Jubilant Song
DESCRIPTION:The Mendocino Music Festival Chorale will perform a concert celebrating American composers\, including music by Aaron Copland\, Norman Dello Joio\, Gwyneth Walker\, and the lovely Frostiana by Randall Thompson. This concert was originally scheduled for 2020 but was cancelled by the pandemic\, so the Festival Chorale is particularly excited (one might even say “jubilant”) to finally be performing this distinct and beautiful music. \nIn addition to Copland\, Dello Joio\, Gwyneth Walker\, and Randall Thompson\, the Chorale will perform gorgeous Mack Wilberg arrangements of traditional songs “Down to the River to Pray” and “Shenandoah.” Barbara Faulkner will join Daniel Lockert in the four-hand accompaniments for these songs\, and for the two Copland pieces. \nJenny Matteucci\, conductor; Daniel Lockert\, piano\nFestival Chorale members are: \n\nSoprano: Cynthia Frank\, Robin Knutson\, Kathy O’Shea\, Abigail Strock\, Laura Vague\nAlto: Cathy Boxell\, Jo Britton\, Deborah Farmar\, Evelyn Harris\nTenor: Joel Ginsberg\, Patrick Gomes\, James Sibbet\, David Strock\nBass: Jim Blanton\, Paul Friesen\, Jason Kirkman\, Randy Knutson\n\n\n	\n \nThe Mendocino Music Festival Chamber Chorale\, directed by Festival Chorus Master Jenny Matteucci\, was formed in 2018 as an offshoot of the much larger Festival Chorus\, members of which were invited to audition. \nFestival Artistic Director Allan Pollack: “I’ve been touched by the dedication of the members of the Festival Chorus\, and so have wanted to create an opportunity for people who are ready to take their choral singing to the next level.” Festival Chorus Master Jenny Matteucci reports\, “It is a joy to work with a group of singers who are willing to do the hard work on vocal technique in order to make increasingly excellent and inspiring music together.” \n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n Public ticket sales begin May 6\, 2026\, at noon Pacific. SUMMARY:Festival Chorale: All Creatures Great and Small (Preston Hall)
DESCRIPTION:Classical composers have always been inspired by animals. Think of orchestral works like Carnival of the Animals by St. Saens or Peter and the Wolf by Prokofiev. In the field of vocal music\, the great lieder composers found inspiration in bird flight\, the galloping of horses\, or the tranquility of the gazelle. The Italian madrigal\, El grillo\, is a popular one about the cricket. British composer John Rutter’s “All Things Bright and Beautiful” is a newer setting of a familiar hymn text by Cecil Frances Alexander\, who is also known for her Christmas carol\, “Once in Royal David’s City.” Samuel Barber’s “The Monk and his Cat” is his choral arrangement of one of his “Hermit Songs\,” originally written for solo voice (premiered by Leontyne Price with the composer at the piano.) The two selections by Aaron Copland are also arrangements for chorus of his “Old American Songs\,” Two of William Blake’s most beloved poems\, “The Lamb” and “The Tiger\,” were given choral settings by two different composers. British composer John Tavener’s “The Lamb” was first performed by the King’s College Choir\, Cambridge as a part of their Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. It has been associated with Christmas ever since. Virgil Thomson’s “The Tiger” is a choral arrangement by the composer of a solo song for baritone and orchestra from his “Five William Blake Poems.” “Blackbird” by Lennon and McCartney is an acknowledgment of the plight of the African American\, with an ending exhortation to “Take these broken wings and learn to fly.” The two sets of “Animal Crackers” by Eric Whitacre are just that: crackers! They combine witty animal poems by Ogden Nash with clever choral writing to poke fun at “serious” classical music with delightfully silly sounds. \nIn this concert\, the Festival Chorale\, directed by Jenny Matteucci\, with pianist Daniel Lockert\, presents a menagerie of songs celebrating our four-legged and winged friends\, from hilarious to heartwarming. Festival Chorale members are: \n\nSoprano: Cynthia Frank\, Robin Knutson\, Kathy O’Shea\, Abigail Strock\, Laura Vague\nAlto: Cathy Boxell\, Jo Britton\, Deborah Farmar\, Evelyn Harris\, Kathy Warner\nTenor: Joel Ginsberg\, Jason Kirkman\, James Sibbet\, David Strock\nBass: Jim Blanton\, Matt Evans\, Paul Friesen\, Jeff Grant\, Randy Knutson\n\n\n	\n \nThe Mendocino Music Festival Chamber Chorale\, directed by Festival Chorus Master Jenny Matteucci\, was formed in 2018 as an offshoot of the much larger Festival Chorus\, members of which were invited to audition. \nFestival Artistic Director Allan Pollack: “I’ve been touched by the dedication of the members of the Festival Chorus\, and so have wanted to create an opportunity for people who are ready to take their choral singing to the next level.” Festival Chorus Master Jenny Matteucci reports\, “It is a joy to work with a group of singers who are willing to do the hard work on vocal technique in order to make increasingly excellent and inspiring music together.” \n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n	\n \nProof of completed COVID-19 vaccination\, including at least one booster\, is required\, and masks must be properly worn at all times while on event premises. Though it might exceed official requirements\, this policy is based on current conditions and the results of our most recent audience survey. \nThis concert was originally scheduled for June 19\, 2022. Tickets inscribed with that date will be honored on the new date. \n\n \n	\n\n\nBUY TICKETS

SUMMARY:Festival Big Band\, featuring Kim Nalley
DESCRIPTION:According to the San Francisco Chronicle\, “Kim Nalley is a vocal powerhouse with pipes to burn and works the stage like she means it.” Put her in front of the seasoned Festival Big Band musicians and you have an evening of red-hot jazz\, steamy blues\, and sexy swing. \n\n	\n \nThis concert may be attended either in person\, or virtually via livestream. When your ticket order includes a livestream ticket\, your confirmation email contains a link that opens a browser-based player. For large-screen viewing\, access the email via your smart TV’s web browser. “Casting” your device’s screen to a TV may also be an option. \n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \nFor 2022\, the Festival’s main stage is again temporarily transplanted from our signature Tent Concert Hall in Mendocino Headlands State Park to the beautiful\, iconic and historic 1938 Cotton Auditorium in nearby Fort Bragg. We’re pleased to also welcome the return of more intimate concerts in Preston Hall\, our smaller Mendocino venue. While we’d hoped to be back in the Tent Concert Hall this year\, the combination of pandemic-related disruptions in the availability of vital resources (such as labor) and lingering uncertainty about public health conditions this summer would have made that an unacceptably risky proposition. Meanwhile\, work is under way toward our 2023 return to our home since 1985\, the Tent Concert Hall on the Mendocino Headlands. \n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n	\n \nProof of completed COVID-19 vaccination\, including at least one booster\, is required\, and masks must be properly worn at all times while on event premises. Legendary drummer Ralph Humphrey will be joined by Mitchel Forman on keyboards\, Jerrold Watts Jr. on bass\, and Dmitris Mahlis on guitars. Each artist has performed with various groups as part of the MMF and in Fort Bragg’s Sequoia Room. Listeners can expect music that is unique\, intelligent\, exciting and satisfying to the soul. \n\nRalph Humphrey\, Drums (Don Ellis\, Frank Zappa\, Al Jarreau\, The Manhattan Transfer\, Wayne Shorter\, Babaghanoush\, Odd Dogs)\nMitchel Forman\, Keyboards. (Stan Getz\, Wayne Shorter\, John McGlaughlin and The Mahavishnu Orchestra\nJerrold Watts Jr.\, Bass (Babaghanoush\, Andy Summers\, John Daversa\, Dori Caymmi\, Billy Childs\, Keith Emerson)\nDmitris Mahlis\, Guitars (Babaghanoush\, Perla Batalla\, Wahid\, Freddy Hubbard\, A.R. Rahman)\n\n\n\n	\n \n \nFor 2022\, the Festival’s main stage is again temporarily transplanted from our signature Tent Concert Hall in Mendocino Headlands State Park to the beautiful\, iconic and historic 1938 Cotton Auditorium in nearby Fort Bragg. Though it might exceed official requirements\, this policy is based on current conditions and the results of our most recent audience survey. \n\n \n	\n\n\n\nCHOOSE SEATS AND BUY

SUMMARY:L'apero at Ledford House
DESCRIPTION:Featured wines at this event \nWhen there is nothing left to do besides have good food and wine with friends\, L’apéro is the part of the day when the French pause and convene for a drink over small plates; after work\, before a concert or whatever the evening’s activity might be. \nFor many years owners Tony and Lisa Geer provided “the iconic” Ledford House Dinner. The pandemic made that impossible these past two years\, and even now a cozy\, crowded dinner seems unwise. \nWe worked with the Geers to come up with a way to celebrate the season more safely\, by using the dining rooms as well as the beautiful outdoor areas. There will be a bountiful buffet\, plenty of places to sit if desired\, and wonderful wines. \nPremium wines generously supplied by Husch Vineyards. $75 per person. Space is limited. \nThe Ledford House Restaurant is located seven miles South of Mendocino on Highway One in Albion\, California. Its blufftop location on the Albion headlands allows panoramic views of the Pacific ocean and breathtaking sunsets. The restaurant reflects the provencal style of Southern France\, and accommodates 65 to 90 people in the elegance of two dining rooms where expansive windows allow the Pacific Ocean to become part of the decor. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming with a casual elegance\, both comfortable and sophisticated. The food has a strong Mediterranean influence with subtle drawings on Asian and Latin flavors grounded by a California style. The produce\, meat\, poultry and fish served come from farms\, ranches and fisheries guided by principles of sustainability. \nClick to Reserve Now

Though it might exceed official requirements\, this policy is based on current conditions and the results of our most recent audience survey. \n\n \n	\n\n\n\nCHOOSE SEATS AND BUY \n\n\n\n	\n \nDebussy: 2022 Featured Composer\n \nFor 2022\, Susan Waterfall’s composer series will feature the innovative and influential Claude Debussy. Immerse yourself in his world and his music\, and understand how his music evolved over his lifetime with narrated chamber recitals featuring exciting guest artists\, and various other settings of Debussy’s work across the Festival. \nExplore the Series \nIf you’d like to familiarize yourself with some of this music in advance\, we recommend the following recordings and notes: String Quartet performance\,  String Quartet notes\, more String Quartet notes\, Afternoon of a Faun performance\, Faun notes. \nWaterfall’s productions always present exciting\, absorbing playing of great music\, but are also rare\, distinctive examples of what can be called music education\, though they’re more conversational\, truly a sharing of perspective\, interest\, anecdote. There’s a sense of immediacy to her delivery\, weaving in and out of the playing\, an intimately conceived present awareness of this heritage. It’s something unique that needs to be experienced.” -Ken Bullock\, Berkeley Daily Planet

SUMMARY:The StepCrew
DESCRIPTION:Created by Cara Butler and Jon and Nathan Pilatzke (longtime touring members of The Chieftains)\, The StepCrew combines Irish\, Tap and Ottawa Valley Step dancing\, music\, and song. The virtuosic cast of 11 dancers and musician\, made up of leading performers in today’s Celtic music scene\, has appeared on the stages of Celtic festivals all over the world. \nThe StepCrew is a brilliant visual and musical display of the most talented dancers I’ve seen. It’s refreshing to see a performance of this style based on pure ability as the dancers are certainly nothing less than virtuosic in their respective styles. The first time I saw Jon and Nathan Pilatzke dancing with Cara Butler was the best thing I’d seen since sliced bread. Having worked with them for the last eight years has been a true tonic for The Chieftains. The StepCrew does not simply draw their audience in\, they take them by the hand and remind us what dance is meant to be about – fun.”- Paddy Moloney\, The Chieftains \nThe StepCrew is a show that very simply\, cannot be missed. The focus\, energy\, and sheer virtuosity on display from the entire cast is nothing short of mind-boggling. I have yet to encounter a dance show of such unique proportions\, seamlessly blending the best of three different percussive styles into what can only be called a tour de force. The StepCrew is truly one of the most exciting things I have seen in a long time.”- Jean Butler of Riverdance\, Dancing on Dangerous Ground \n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \nFor 2022\, the Festival’s main stage is again temporarily transplanted from our signature Tent Concert Hall in Mendocino Headlands State Park to the beautiful\, iconic and historic 1938 Cotton Auditorium in nearby Fort Bragg. SUMMARY:Bululú
DESCRIPTION:The vernacular Venezuelan term\, bululú\, means “a gathering of people with excitement.” The San Francisco Bay Area band launched by Venezuelan-born percussionist Lali Mejia and Mexican string expert and vocalist Jose Roberto Hernandez manifests kindred cultural streams flowing together harmoniously. The nine-piece combo of veteran performers draws on folkloric styles from Venezuelan\, Colombian\, Chilean\, Cuban and other Caribbean cultures to showcase such musical styles as tamboreras\, calipsos\, salsa\, cumbias\, sambas\, and tambores de la costa.\nBululú is creating an infectiously grooving new sound.”- Berkeleyside \n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \nFor 2022\, the Festival’s main stage is again temporarily transplanted from our signature Tent Concert Hall in Mendocino Headlands State Park to the beautiful\, iconic and historic 1938 Cotton Auditorium in nearby Fort Bragg.
