SUMMARY:Poncho Sanchez and his Latin Jazz Band 2014
DESCRIPTION:Featured wines at this performance Poncho Sanchez’s music is a swirl of some of the hottest colors and brightest lights to emerge from either side of the border. At every show Latin jazz\, swing\, bebop\, salsa and other infectious grooves collide and churn with results that are no less than dazzling. Among the more prominent figures that inform his music are conga drummer and composer Chano Pozo\, and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie. \nPoncho Sanchez says\, “There’s room for a lot of different sounds in our music. We put it all together in a pot\, boil it together and come out with a big stew. This isn’t some marketing strategy to sell records. These are the sounds I grew up with. So when I play this music\, I’m not telling a lie. I’m telling my story. This is the real thing.” \nIn 2000\, Sanchez and his ensemble won the Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album for their work on the Concord Picante album Latin Soul. In 2012 Sanchez received A Lifetime Achievement Award from the Latin Recording Academy. As a teen\, Sanchez first learned to play guitar from “the guy across the street” because he couldn’t afford to buy an instrument. DESCRIPTION:The concert will consist of the Mozart Quintet in E flat Major for Piano and Winds K.452\, and the Schumann Quintet in E flat Major for Piano and Strings\, played by the world-class Festival Orchestra’s principal players\, joined by pianists Miles Graber and Carolyn Steinbuck. \nMozart wrote his only piano quintet at the height of his powers\, when he was 28 years old.  He had never before attempted a piece for such a combination of instruments: bassoon\, clarinet\, horn and oboe. He wrote to his father\, “I myself consider it to be the best thing I have written in my life.”  For Schumann\, it was the first time a piano was combined with what is now known as a string quartet (substituting cello for double bass). DESCRIPTION:Featured wines at this performance \nOne of the first and longest-lasting country-rock groups\, POCO will perform an encore concert on the stage of the Mendocino Music Festival.  Rusty Young has announced the band’s February 2014 retirement from regular touring\, but has agreed to do one more performance for the Festival as a result of the great reception the band got in 2013. \nFormed by members of Buffalo Springfield in 1968\, POCO was originally a southern California group\, but many of its members live in Nashville now.
