SUMMARY:Elegance in Elk 2017
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, December 10\, 2017\, 2:00 to 5:00\nThe Mendocino Music Festival invites you to gather in the gorgeous home of James Cummings and Justin Mohatt on the cliffs of Elk. Enjoy an afternoon of fine music and refreshment\, with music from Kim Nalley accompanied by Dave Weeks (guitar) and Michael Zisman (bass); wines from Handley Cellars; and edible entertainment from Sharon Garner. \nAdmission is $135 per person. In support of all who were tragically impacted by the recent fires the Festival will donate 10% of the gross proceeds from this event to the Community Foundation of Mendocino County’s Disaster Fund and to the Association of California Symphony Orchestra’s Communities in Crisis Concert Fund. \nEnjoy Libations\, Sensations\, Delectables\, Treats\, and your Festival Community—all in a matchless setting!\nReserve Now \n\nKim Nalley\n \n“GOD\, CAN THIS WOMAN SING! It’s as if a vocalist from the great post-war blues and jazz combos had been transported to the end of the century.” -Blues Access Magazine \n“Kim Nalley has pipes to burn and works the stage like she means it.” -San Francisco Chronicle \n“Sultry voiced Kim Nalley brings an irresistibly sexy sense of swing\, rhythmic dexterity and beautiful sound to the classic\, with her crisp diction and playful delivery of earthy lines.” -Down Beat \nAwarded “Most Influential African American in the Bay Area” in 2005 and “Best Jazz Group” in 2013\, vocalist Kim Nalley is already being called “legendary” and “a San Francisco institution.” No trip to San Francisco is complete without seeing Kim Nalley perform. With an international reputation as one of world’s best jazz and blues vocalists\, she has graced concert halls from Moscow to Lincoln Center. A true Renaissance woman\, Kim Nalley has also been a featured writer for JazzWest and SF Chronicle’s City Brights\, shortlisted for a Grammy nomination\, a produced playwright\, a former jazz club owner\, an accomplished stage actress\, a PhD candidate in history at UC Berkeley\, and an avid Lindy Hop and blues dancer. Her many philanthropic endeavors include founding the Kim Nalley Black Youth Jazz Scholarship. \nVisually\, Kim Nalley exudes the aura of a diva from a bygone era. Vocally\, she has pipes to burn\, packing a 3 1/2 octave range that can go from operatic to gritty blues on a dime\, projection that can whisper a ballad yet is capable of filling a room with no microphone\, and the ability to scat blistering solos without ever losing the crowd’s interest or the intense swing. She has been compared to all the greats\, but in the end\, it’s Kim Nalley and no one else—an unforced instrument with clarity and jazzy musicality\, effortlessly delivered\, and a sense of humor to boot. \nA born singer from a family that boasts several generations of jazz musicians\, Nalley was taught piano by her great-grandmother and studied classical music and theatre in high school before relocating to San Francisco in the footsteps of the Grateful Dead. Working her way through college by singing in small dives and jam sessions\, Nalley learned all of the intricacies of jazz the old fashioned way. Music critic Phil Elwood and San Francisco Symphony conductor Michael Tilson Thomas quickly discovered Kim Nalley and brought her to national attention after they noticed her singing nightly at the Alta Plaza to packed audiences&mdask;without amplification. Tilson Thomas hired Kim Nalley to sing a program of Gershwin with the San Francisco Symphony and recorded her farewell concert at the Alta Plaza. \nSince then\, Kim Nalley has performed globally\, including major jazz festivals such as Monterey\, Umbria Jazz and Lincoln Center and lived in Europe for several years before returning to San Francisco to re-open the jazz club Jazz at Pearl’s. During her tenure from 2003 to 2008\, Nalley raised the club to iconic international acclaim as the owner and artistic director. \nShe has collaborated with artists such as Rhoda Scott\, David “Fathead” Newman\, Houston Person\, James Williams\, Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony. She has recorded several on both major and indie labels\, including She Put A Spell On Me\, which was short-listed for a 2006 Grammy Award\, and Million Dollar Secret\, which charted in the Jazz Top 40. \nNalley often combines music and history to create historiographical concerts \, including her award-winning “Ladies Sing the Blues*\,” “She Put a Spell on Me: Tribute to Nina Simone\,” “Freedom’s Song: Music of the Civil Rights Movement\,” musical director and curator for the Martin Luther King Institute’s Commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and “The Heart of Lady Day\,” a Billie Holiday biopic. As a playwright she has written “Ella: the American Dream” a bio-musical about Ella Fitzgerald which premiered in 2008. As an actress she portrayed Billie Holiday in the dramatic play “Lady Day in Love\,” Blues Speak woman in Zora Neale Hurston’s “Spunk” and has starred in Teatro Zinzanni as Madame Zinzanni\, a role subsequently filled by Joan Baez and Sandra Reeves-Phillips. \nKim Nalley is on faculty at the California Jazz Conservatory. She is a Ph.D candidate in UC Berkeley’s history department with plans to write her dissertation on the Globalization of Jazz and Black Cultural Politics.\n\nOur Hosts for Elegance in Elk 2017\n“We’re so thankful that we’re able to host this party for the Mendocino Musical Festival. And we feel very fortunate that we can share the home we love with others who appreciate the important role that the Festival plays in the community. We look forward to meeting many more people\, and to giving back in this way.” \n–James Cummings and Justin Mohatt \n\nWines by Handley Cellars\nHandley Cellars is a small family-owned Mendocino County winery producing around 12\,000 cases a year. “At Handley Cellars\, we firmly believe in a conscious and conscientious approach to farming and winemaking. We purchase grapes from small\, local\, family growers\, and whenever possible\, we select fruit that is farmed organically. Our winemaking philosophy is to let the distinctive qualities of each vineyard shine through. Working with carefully tended\, exceptional sites\, we strive to create wines which faithfully reflect the unique characteristics of the vineyards and viticultural region\, focusing on our appellation of Anderson Valley. From start to finish\, we are mindful of our impact on our rural valley\, and the implications of our farming and wine making choices for future generations.”\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\nReserve Now

It connects us with our memories and our histories and can transport us both physically and spiritually to another time. \nCooking for me is about bringing people together and nurturing them in the most primal of ways. Cooking is far more than a profession or a hobby; it is a passion that infuses everything from the ingredients I select\, to the time and attention I put into menu planning and presentation of the finished product. \nFood also connects us to the Earth\, which is why I strive wherever possible to use local\, wild crafted and sustainable ingredients. I have cultivated relationships with local purveyors to insure that everything I prepare is fresh and life enhancing. \n\nIn the unique home and noted garden of Deborah Whigham and Gary Ratway\nDeborah Whigham and Gary Ratway\, owners of the renowned Digging Dog Nursery\, have offered their uniquely gorgeous home and their stunning private garden to the Festival for this party. The garden was featured (10 pages and the cover) in Martha Stewart Living and many other publications\, including Pacific Horticulture and Gardens Illustrated. Recently it was included as one of 50 gardens in the newly published Garden Conservancy book\, Outstanding American Gardens\, and is the subject of a ten-page spread in the Spring 2018 issue of Garden Design. Gary and Deborah will treat guests to an informative guided tour of the garden\, showing how plants can provide structure\, making for year-round form and beauty.\n\nRESERVE NOW

SUMMARY:Julian Pollack and J3P0 2017
DESCRIPTION:Featured wines at this performance \nJulian Pollack brings his project and band J3P0 to the Festival stage this summer. Pollack will be joined by Cale Hawkins\, Justin Golder and Adam Jackson. These jazz musicians explore popular songs from the later part of the 20th century as well as originals\, through the lens of talk box vocals and jazz harmony\, with a nod to contemporary music production. Experience the latest New York neo-fusion—jazz\, funk and soul—in kaleidoscopic arrangements using laptops\, synthesizers\, and the Talkbox. \n“I remember when my love for the talkbox began. I was a young kid sitting in the back of the car listening on my Discman to “California Love (remix)” from Tupac’s masterpiece double-disc album All Eyes On Me (1996). The chorus\, which Roger Troutman sings on talkbox\, is great\, but what really turned me on was the solo he takes at the end of the track. The beat drops out and it’s just Roger wailing away about California and quoting some of his other hit songs. I listened to that over and over again. At the time\, I didn’t know what a talkbox was. I had heard the word “vocoder” before amongst musicians and I thought that that was the sound it made. I imagined Roger speaking into a microphone and making those sounds on the keyboard. I was so wrong!” \nMore about Julian and the Talkbox. \nCHOOSE SEATS AND BUY \n\n\n\n\nCHOOSE SEATS AND BUY

SUMMARY:Festival Orchestra 2 2017
DESCRIPTION:Featured wines at this performance \nOur inquiry into Schubert concludes with one of his most deeply felt orchestral works\, the Symphony No. 8 in B minor (Unfinished); Richard Strauss’ Burleske in D minor for piano and orchestra features dazzling keyboard work; and Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 in C minor\, Op. 68 closes the concert with “a grand melody in a major key.” \nTicket includes 6:30 PM pre-concert lecture by Kayleen Asbo\, Ph. D.\n\nCHOOSE SEATS AND BUY \n\n\n	\n \nUnderstanding Schubert: Affirmations of Individualism\n \nJoin Susan Waterfall and an array of exceptional Festival musicians for three days of lectures and narrated concerts exploring the life and music of Schubert. The Vienna of Mozart and Beethoven changed with an increasingly large and regimented urban middle class. The inwardness of Schubert’s music mirrored the search for meaning in a world where nature was increasingly seen as the only solace. \nExplore the Series \n“Waterfall’s productions always present exciting\, absorbing playing of great music\, but are also rare\, distinctive examples of what can be called music education\, though they’re more conversational\, truly a sharing of perspective\, interest\, anecdote. There’s a sense of immediacy to her delivery\, weaving in and out of the playing\, an intimately conceived present awareness of this heritage. SUMMARY:Schubert Chamber Music 1 2017
DESCRIPTION:Susan Waterfall will play Moments Musicaux and discuss the significance of Schubert’s “character pieces\,” which\, like lieder\, suited the Romantic goals of intimacy and fantasy. Schubert’s exceptional ability to portray women in lieder will be demonstrated by soprano Julie Kierstine and pianist Daniel Lockert. The Octet\, modeled on Beethoven’s popular Septet\, is unusually outgoing\, but its gaiety is outlined with Schubertian shadows. The Octet will be performed by the Festival Chamber Players. \nFestival Chamber Players:\nJay Zhong\, violin\nTammie Dyer\, violin\nDon Ehrlich\, viola\nStephen Harrison\, cello\nMichael Taddei\, contra bass\nEric Kritz\, clarinet\nCarolyn Lockhart\, bassoon\nLarry Lowe\, horn \n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n	\n \nUnderstanding Schubert: Affirmations of Individualism\n \nJoin Susan Waterfall and an array of exceptional Festival musicians for three days of lectures and narrated concerts exploring the life and music of Schubert. SUMMARY:Kanekoa\, Joan Soriano: Double Bill 2017
DESCRIPTION:Featured wines at this performance \nBorn in the rural countryside near Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic\, Joan Soriano fashioned his first guitar from a tin can and fishing line and has never looked back. Soriano plays steel string bachata with equal parts romance and grit. The Afro-infused rhythm that permeates his music has made him a favorite among dancers. \nThis engagement of Joan Soriano is funded through Southern Exposure: Performing Arts of Latin America\, a program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts. \nDescribing its music as ukulele-powered Hawaiian reggae folk rock\, Kanekoa has been playing together since 1999\, melding elements of Hawaiian\, rock\, folk\, blues\, reggae and improvisation into a truly unique sound. Because their sound is based on the yet untapped potential of the electrified Hawaiian ukulele\, inspired by the range of musical tastes of its players\, and shaped by the land and culture of Hawai’i\, Kanekoa has discovered a land of limitless musical possibility. In short\, you have not seen or heard anything like this. \n\nCHOOSE SEATS AND BUY \n\n\n\n\nCHOOSE SEATS AND BUY

SUMMARY:Understanding Schubert: Multimedia Lecture 2017
DESCRIPTION:In Susan Waterfall’s multi-media exploration of Franz Schubert’s life\, you will learn how the Vienna of Mozart and Beethoven changed with an increasingly large\, restricted and regimented urban middle class. Schubert’s potent settings of Romantic lyric poetry thrived in bourgeois settings where there was a growing need for personal emotional outlet. The inwardness and subjectivity of Schubert’s music mirrored the search for meaning and belonging in an alienating world where nature was increasingly seen as the only solace. \nTenor Brian Thorsett and pianist Miles Graber will perform characteristic lieder.\n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n	\n \nUnderstanding Schubert: Affirmations of Individualism\n \nJoin Susan Waterfall and an array of exceptional Festival musicians for three days of lectures and narrated concerts exploring the life and music of Schubert.
