SUMMARY:Calder Quartet 2017
DESCRIPTION:Back for a fifth year of insightful and moving playing\, the Calder will perform the Mendelssohn String Quartet No. 2 in A minor\, Op.13; and the Beethoven String Quartet No. 15 in A minor\, Op. 132. \nPerformances like these — freshly rethought\, impeccably played — do more than provide enjoyable listening. They reveal hidden dimensions\, renew a bond with the composer\, and justify the continuance of familiar works in the repertory. Boston Globe \nThe Calder’s Beethoven was full of flaring drama\, furrowed brows and quiet intensity. But\, with the tightest of ensemble playing and well-judged balancing of instrumental voices\, the piece retained its classical integrity and polished finish. Washington Post \nI’ve written before that every time I hear the Calder\, the ensemble seems to have reached a new level. That remains true\, and now only the stars are the limit\, as the Calder takes its place as one of America’s most satisfying — and most enterprising — quartets. SUMMARY:Does Music Transform Young Lives?
DESCRIPTION:Does Music Transform Young Lives?\nYes! The Mendocino Music Festival and the Community Center of Mendocino invite you to spend an hour experiencing the transformative joy that music can bring to kids. Listen to nine-year old Frej Barty describe the process of developing a plot for the mini-opera we presented at last summer’s Operation Opera\, Abduction From the Webaglio\, part of our Community Center summer camp\, and then enjoy a video of the performance. Share in the magic as CCM Program Director Peg Brown Levy and musician Mary Linklater help the children create a working musical instrument. Parents will also enjoy three heartwarming short videos illustrating how kids can grow and better connect with their communities and each other by making music together. \nIn July 2017 the Mendocino Music Festival and the Community Center of Mendocino will build on a solid tradition of making music with kids. In 2015 the Festival partnered with the Community Center to create Operation Opera\, a fun week-long day camp. This exciting program brought Festival performers into the classroom and also allowed kids to experience many aspects of the Festival performance and organization up close. Last summer we added Operation Orchestra\, bringing players from the different orchestral groups — strings\, brass\, and woodwinds — and culminated with a field trip to the Festival tent for a timpani demonstration and a chance to observe an orchestra rehearsal. We are pleased to announce that in 2017 we will be offering both of these great camps. Operation Opera will run July 10-14 and Operation Orchestra will run July 17-21. Don’t miss out! \nNo charge\, thanks to the Mendocinio Music Festival and the Community Center of Mendocino. Reserve your space\, and help us estimate materials for the children’s instrument-making activity\, with free tickets. \nFREE - RESERVE YOUR SPACE

Her latest release\, No Place to Fall\, presents Grace’s dynamic original songs alongside revelatory covers of artists as diverse as Duke Ellington\, Tom Waits\, Townes Van Zandt and The Meat Puppets. Grace’s trademark pure sound and deep lyrical connection infuse every moment of the album\, from her deliciously honky-tonk interpretations of standards\, to her own original music. The LA Times has described Grace’s latest project as “Haunting steel-guitar riffs crossed with Grace’s jazz-infused interpretations? Pure buttah!” The ten tracks on No Place to Fallwere produced by Sheldon Gomberg whose recent work with Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite just won the 2014 Grammy for Best Blues Album.\n\n\n\n\n\n \nFood by Assaggiare Mendocino\nAssaggiare Mendocino proprietor Julia Conway: “…it’s about connecting to the natural world that nourishes us all. It’s about farmers and ranchers\, and the land and the water. It’s about the idea of sharing sustenance with those you care about in the context of a meal. It’s about connecting with the rich cultural history that has been passed on to us through the foods we eat.” She believes that eating is more than supplying our bodies with fuel\, though not discounting the value of healthy foods. Instead\, eating feeds our souls as well as our bodies. Food provides a context for our history\, our lives and our relationships.” [popup_trigger id=”4380″ tag=”span”]See the menu.[/popup_trigger]\n\nWines by Handley Cellars\nHandley Cellars is a small family-owned Mendocino County winery producing around 12\,000 cases a year. “At Handley Cellars\, we firmly believe in a conscious and conscientious approach to farming and winemaking. We purchase grapes from small\, local\, family growers\, and whenever possible\, we select fruit that is farmed organically. Our winemaking philosophy is to let the distinctive qualities of each vineyard shine through. Working with carefully tended\, exceptional sites\, we strive to create wines which faithfully reflect the unique characteristics of the vineyards and viticultural region\, focusing on our appellation of Anderson Valley. From start to finish\, we are mindful of our impact on our rural valley\, and the implications of our farming and wine making choices for future generations.”\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\nReserve Now

SUMMARY:Glorious Gardens and Bluegrass 2016
DESCRIPTION:RESERVE NOWGlorious Gardens and Bluegrass\nA Perfect Autumn Afternoon\nSunday\, October 23\, 2016\, 1:30 to 4:30 pm\n$125 per person\n\nWe’re delighted that Laurie Lewis\, joined by Tom Rozum on mandolin\, Max Schwartz on string bass\, and Nina Gerber on guitar\, will provide lively and soulful bluegrass music. Laurie Lewis and Tom Rozum are widely regarded as being among the preeminent bluegrass and Americana artists of our time. They formed a musical partnership in 1986\, when Tom joined Laurie’s acclaimed band\, Grant Street. Between them\, they have recorded over twenty albums\, as a duo and with their many talented musical friends\, including their 1995 Grammy-nominated album “The Oak and the Laurel.” Their latest release\, “The Hazel and Alice Sessions\,” delves into the repertoire of Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerard\, two trailblazing women of bluegrass music. \nMore about Laurie Lewis\n\n1:30 – Gather\n2:30-3:30 – Concert\n3:30-4:30 – Garden tours\n[popup_trigger id=”4331″ tag=”span”]Edible Entertainment[/popup_trigger] by Assaggiare Mendocino\nAssaggiare Mendocino proprietor Julia Conway: “…it’s about connecting to the natural world that nourishes us all. Food provides a context for our history\, our lives and our relationships.” \nSee the menu.\n\nCiders (hard and soft) by Philo Apple Farm\nIt was the cold wet winter of 1984 when we first began to tame the wild and neglected property that we call simply “The Apple Farm.” There were apple trees\, but it wasn’t much of a farm. Over a quarter century\, we have come a long way. To our delight we now have three generations working together in ever greater harmony with the land. Our farmhouse cider contains no additives of any kind. We rely on the natural yeasts for fermentation and the natural sugars for a little spritz in the bottle. We aim for dry and sparkling and we love it with our meals and as an ingredient in soups and stews. Not every batch is the same. The ones we don’t like go into the vinegar barrel.\n\nWines by Greenwood Ridge Vineyards\nEstablished in 1980 and located in the rolling coastal hills of the renowned Anderson Valley\, Greenwood Ridge Vineyards has built a reputation for producing world class artisanal wines from renowned vineyards in the valley and surrounding hills. Named one of America’s top 30 wineries three times in recent years by Wine & Spirits Magazine\, Greenwood Ridge continually receives Best of Show awards at major wine competitions.\n\nIn the unique home and noted garden of Deborah Whigham and Gary Ratway\nDeborah Whigham and Gary Ratway\, owners of the renowned Digging Dog Nursery\, have offered their uniquely gorgeous home and their stunning private garden to the Festival for this party. The garden was featured (10 pages and the cover) in Martha Stewart Living and many other publications\, including Pacific Horticulture and Gardens Illustrated. Recently it was included as one of 50 gardens in the newly published Garden Conservancy book\, Outstanding American Gardens. Gary will treat guests to an informative guided tour of the garden\, showing how plants can provide structure\, making for year-round form and beauty.\n\nRESERVE NOW

Each year Clayt and Meredythe Daley contribute many important wine lots to Winesong\, the annual Hospital Foundation fundraiser. Thanks to their generosity and support of the Festival\, you will have a chance during this evening to acquire some lovely wines from the Daley collection. Take this opportunity to add a bottle or several to your collection! All of the wines have been properly stored and cellared.\nLot #1 Flight of four Adrian Fog Savoy Vineyard Pinot Noir\nOne 750 ml bottle each 2004\, 2005\, 2006 and 2007\, valued at $275\n2004 Adrian Fog Savoy Vineyard Pinot Noir 90 points Robert Parker. “The 2004 Pinot Noir Savoy Vineyard possesses blue fruits and floral notes in its medium-bodied personality. Tangy acidity\, considerable complexity\, and an artisanal style emerge from this beauty.” 2005 Adrian Fog “Savoy Vineyard” Pinot Noir 92 points Robert Parker. “Adrian Fog produces some of California’s most compellingly complex\, aromatic Pinots. The 2005 Pinot Noir Savoy Vineyard is reminiscent of a premier or grand cru from Burgundy’s village of Morey-St. Denis. Forest floor\, fresh mushroom\, spearmint\, plum\, root beer and strawberry characteristics are found in this soft\, medium-to-full-bodied\, round effort.\n2006 Adrian Fog Savoy Vineyard Pinot Noir 89+ points Robert Parker. “Blueberry\, raspberry\, forest floor\, and violet notes make an appearance in this medium dark ruby-colored Pinot. There is sweet fruit on the attack\, but the acidity and tannin quickly kick in\, and the finish is tight and restrained. This is a purely made wine that captures the elusive nature of this varietal.”\n2007 Adrian Fog Savoy Vineyard Pinot Noir 91 points Josh Raynolds. “Pungent dark fruits\, cherry compote and musky underbrush on the nose\, with sexy rose and fruitcake qualities gaining strength with air. Broad and flesh on entry\, then turns tighter in the mid-palate and offers densely packed blackberry and cherry flavors. Fin-grained tannins add grip and focus to the long\, smoky finish. This is complex enough to drink now but has the depth to repay patience.”\n\nLot #2 Flight of Adrian Fog Two Sisters Vineyard Pinot Noir\nOne 750 ml bottle each of 2004\, 205\, 2006\, 2007\, valued at $250\n2004 Adrian Fog Two Sisters Vineyard Forest floor\, fresh mushroom\, herb\, and loamy soil notes intermixed with hints of cola\, black cherries\, and berries jump from the glass of the light ruby-hued\, fresh\, austere 2004 Pinot Noir Two Sisters Vineyard. It is spicy with more of an autumnal … Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.\n2005 Adrian Fog Two Sisters Vineyard Using only the Martini clone from 52 year old vines gives this Pinot Noir an abundance of raspberries\, bonbons and fresh earth characteristics. By aging 11months in new French oak with toasted heads adds a smoky vanilla and cinnamon component.\n2006 Adrian Fog Two Sisters Vineyard Also from the Martini clone and aged in new toasted French oak.\n2007 Adrian Fog Two Sisters Vineyard Sadly\, this is our last offering from this vineyard as the property has been sold. Produced by natural fermentation using only free run juice. Bottled unfined\, unfiltered. Cellar for 5 – 7 years. 50 cases produced.\n\nLot #3 Flight of Breggo Ferrington Vineyard Pinot Noir\nOne 750 ml bottle each of 2006\, 2007\, 2009\, 2010 and 2011\, valued at $400\n2006 Breggo Ferrington Vineyard Pinot Noir. Reviewed by Prestige Wine & Spirits: “Bright medium red. Spicy raspberry and cherry on the nose\, with suave floral qualities adding complexity. The sappy\, sweet red berry preserve flavors are perked up by tangy minerality. Dusty tannins add grip to the finish\, which leaves a sweet raspberry note behind.”\n2007 Breggo Ferrington Vineyard Pinot Noir. When Robert Parker reviewed Breggo’s 2007 wines\, he put Breggo in his “Best of California” newsletter.\n2009 Breggo Ferrington Vineyard Pinot Noir. Wine expert Richard Jennings rated this 90 points. “Medium red color with pale meniscus; pie crust\, lightly spicy cherry nose; soft\, spicy cherry\, pie crust palate; medium-plus finish.”\n2010 Breggo Ferrington Vineyard Pinot Noir. Richard Jennings: “Dark cherry red color; floral\, tart cherry\, roses nose; tight\, silky textured\, ripe cherry\, floral palate; medium-plus finish.” 90+ points\n2011 Breggo Ferrington Vineyard Pinot Noir. 92 points Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar “Vivid ruby-red. A heady\, complex bouquet evokes candied red fruits\, cherry-cola and potpourri\, with a peppery\, spicy topnote. Juicy and precise\, with strong lift to its black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors. The floral quality comes back strong on the impressively persistent finish\, which features silky tannins and a late bite of smoky minerals.”\n\nLot #4 Three Breggo Pinot Noir\nSavoy Vineyard 2007 and 2009 and Donnelly Creek Vineyard 2010. 750 ml all. Valued at $200\n2007 Breggo Savoy Vineyard Pinot Noir 91 points from Robert Parker. “Aromas of cherries\, blueberries\, pomegranates\, earth\, and forest floor emerge from the 2007 Pinot Noir Savoy Vineyard. It is tighter-knit with more structure than its generic sibling\, but it should prove to be just as good as well longer lived (7-10 years). There is a lot going on in this medium ruby effort.”\n2009 Breggo Savoy Vineyard Pinot Noir Rated 92 by Stephen Tanzer “Musky\, floral-scented aromas of dried red berries and charry\, with wild herb and mocha nuances and a hint of star anise.\n2010 Breggo Donnelly Creek Vineyard Pinot Noir Stephen Tanzer\, 91 points: Bright ruby. Fragrant bouquet of dark berries\, Asian spices and orange zest\, with a spicy quality gaining strength with air. Juicy\, focused flavors of sweet blackberry and cherry flavors complemented by a hint of bitter chocolate. The sappy finish lingers with very good\, gently smoky intensity.
