SUMMARY:Susan Waterfall presents: Why We Love Igor

Experience the fascinating life of the greatest composer of the 20th century\, including excerpts from 25 of his works\, along with compelling images and photographs. \nA Q&A will follow the screening. \nWritten and directed by Susan Waterfall.\nArt and photograph collection by Mina Cohen.\nFilmed and edited by Julian Pollack. \nGET TICKETS\n\n\n	\n \n2025 Featured Composer: Igor Stravinsky\n \nFor 2025\, Susan Waterfall’s composer series will feature the innovative and influential Igor Stravinsky. Immerse yourself in his world and his music\, and understand how his music evolved over his lifetime with narrated chamber recitals featuring exciting guest artists\, and various other settings of Stravinsky’s work across the Festival. \nWaterfall’s productions always present exciting\, absorbing playing of great music\, but are also rare\, distinctive examples of what can be called music education\, though they’re more conversational\, truly a sharing of perspective\, interest\, anecdote. There’s a sense of immediacy to her delivery\, weaving in and out of the playing\, an intimately conceived present awareness of this heritage. It’s something unique that needs to be experienced.” -Ken Bullock\, Berkeley Daily Planet\n \nExplore the Series \n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n	\n \nThe Festival will celebrate Igor Stravinsky with a film and 17 works spread across eight different concerts. On Sunday\, July 6th\, Susan Waterfall’s film\, “Why We Love Igor\,” will provide an overview of the life and work of the 20th century’s greatest composer. The Russian-born composer revolutionized music with his ballets and experiments with rhythm and dissonance. Two concerts (one of which will be performed twice) will be devoted entirely to works by Stravinsky. Chamber Masterpieces will be played in the tent; Stravinsky at Home\, in Preston Hall\, will feature intimate and varied music by the composer\, dedicated to his wives\, children\, and close friends. Stravinsky’s varied compositions will be heard in other orchestra concerts and in Preston Hall performances.

SUMMARY:Stravinsky: Chamber Music for the Concert Hall
DESCRIPTION:L’histoire du soldat shows off Stravinsky’s familiarity with a wide range of musical styles: pasodoble\, tango\, waltz\, ragtime\, klezmer\, and even Luther’s Ein Feste Burg. Concerto in E-flat (“Dumbarton Oaks”) is one of Stravinsky’s two chamber concertos. Stravinsky’s Octet for Wind Instruments is scored for an unusual combination of woodwind and brass. Completed in 1923\, it is generally regarded as the beginning of his neoclassicism. Renard\, or The Fox\, is an opera-ballet that tells the story of the fox who deceives the cock\, the cat\, and the goat\, but who is caught in the end. \n\n \n \n \n \n Ryan Murray\, conductor\n \n \n \n Salvatore Atti\, tenor in Renard\n \n \n \n Matthew Peterson\, baritone in Renard\n \n \n \n Marius Constantin\, tenor in Renard\n \n \n \n Jason Detwiler\, bass in Renard\n \n \n \n\n\n\n	\n Public ticket sales begin May 6\, 2026\, at noon Pacific. SUMMARY:Festival Orchestra 3
DESCRIPTION:Festival Orchestra with guest conductor Francesco Lecce-Chong and soloist Julian Rhee. “Igor on My Mind\,” Allan Pollack’s fun-loving\, energetic and rhythmic piece\, impishly steals motifs straight out of Igor Stravinsky’s orchestral music. Then the real Stravinsky will be heard in the Violin Concerto in D\, a neoclassical piece in four movements\, written in the summer of 1931. It was used by George Balanchine as music for two ballets. Beethoven’s 5th Symphony is one of the most-frequently played compositions in classical music\, but after the familiar opening notes\, it offers surprising new passages to the close listener. At the time he wrote it\, Beethoven was becoming increasingly deaf and correspondingly interested in the music’s theme of heroic struggle. \n\n\n	\n \n2025 Featured Composer: Igor Stravinsky\n \nFor 2025\, Susan Waterfall’s composer series will feature the innovative and influential Igor Stravinsky. SUMMARY:Festival Orchestra 4
DESCRIPTION:The final concert will open with Ad Matrem\, Henryk Gorecki’s sacred work for soprano\, mixed chorus\, and orchestra. Based on the text of the 13th century hymn\, Stabat Mater Dolorosa\, this piece is almost a symphonic poem. Lux Aeterna\, by Morten Lauridsen\, is a choral work fashioned on texts from several different Latin sources\, including the Requiem mass\, with each movement containing a reference to light and all it connotes. The concert and festival will come to a fitting end with Rite of Spring\, Stravinsky’s evocation of the Slavic folk spirit\, with its violent sacrificial dance and extraordinary elemental power.\n\n\n	\n \n2025 Featured Composer: Igor Stravinsky\n \nFor 2025\, Susan Waterfall’s composer series will feature the innovative and influential Igor Stravinsky.
