SUMMARY:Calder Quartet
DESCRIPTION:“Few string quartets can command the stage like the Calder Quartet\,” according to The Washington Post. The extraordinary ensemble is just as renowned for its expert\, empathetic readings of core repertoire as it is for its thrilling commitment to new and unexpected programming. Returning to the Festival for the 12th year\, the Los Angeles-based musicians are sure to delight with their mastery and imagination. \nThe Calder’s Beethoven was full of flaring drama\, furrowed brows and quiet intensity. But\, with the tightest of ensemble playing and well-judged balancing of instrumental voices\, the piece retained its classical integrity and polished finish.”- Washington Post \nI’ve written before that every time I hear the Calder\, the ensemble seems to have reached a new level. That remains true\, and now only the stars are the limit\, as the Calder takes its place as one of America’s most satisfying—and most enterprising—quartets.”- Mark Swed\, Los Angeles Times \nThe Calder Quartet played the most insightful and moving performance of Thomas Adès’s Arcadiana I’ve ever heard.”- Tom Service\, The Guardian UK \nPerformances like these—freshly rethought\, impeccably played—do more than provide enjoyable listening. They reveal hidden dimensions\, renew a bond with the composer\, and justify the continuance of familiar works in the repertory.”- Boston Globe \nProgram (click for details): String Quartet in G Major\, K. 387 “Spring\,” Wolfgang A. Mozart (1756-1791); String Quartet No. 2 in A minor (1935)\, Florence Price (1887-1953); and String Quartet No. 16 in F Major\, Op. 135\, Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827). \n\n\n\n\nCHOOSE SEATS AND BUY \n\n\n	\n \n2026 Featured Composer: Ludwig van Beethoven\n \nLate 18th century Europe. A world in turmoil. A musical genius is born into circumstances that nourish his talent\, but starve him emotionally. He has an innate\, unwavering desire to cure suffering with music that expresses a more perfect world. More than 250 years later\, we are drawn again to Beethoven’s phenomenal musical imagination\, compassion\, and charismatic vision to find meaning and inspiration. Immerse yourself in his world and his music\, and understand how his music evolved over his lifetime\, with a documentary film\, narrated chamber recitals featuring exciting guest artists\, and various other settings of Beethoven’s work across the Festival. \nWaterfall’s productions always present exciting\, absorbing playing of great music\, but are also rare\, distinctive examples of what can be called music education\, though they’re more conversational\, truly a sharing of perspective\, interest\, anecdote. There’s a sense of immediacy to her delivery\, weaving in and out of the playing\, an intimately conceived present awareness of this heritage. It’s something unique that needs to be experienced.” -Ken Bullock\, Berkeley Daily Planet\n \nStream the Documentary (free) \nExplore the Series \n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n	\n \nBeethoven\, Now!\, curated by Susan Waterfall\, includes her documentary film on his life and music\, and performances of seventeen of his works spread over nine symphony and chamber concerts. Two narrated chamber concerts will each include four of his works; pianist Anthony Ratinov will perform Sonata No. 8 in C minor\, the Pathétique; the Calder Quartet will perform his last completed major work\, his String Quartet No. 16 in F Major; pianist Rachel Breen will perform his last three Sonatas\, Op. 109\, 110 and 111; participants in the Festival’s Emerging Artists Program will perform his String Quartet No. 13 in B-flat Major\, Op. 130; and the Festival Orchestra will perform his 6th and 7th symphonies\, closing the Festival with his iconic 9th Symphony. \nStream the Documentary (free)

SUMMARY:Festival Big Band\, featuring Kim Nalley
DESCRIPTION:According to the San Francisco Chronicle\, “Kim Nalley is a vocal powerhouse with pipes to burn and works the stage like she means it.” Put her in front of the seasoned Festival Big Band musicians and you have an evening of red-hot jazz\, steamy blues\, and sexy swing. \n\n	\n \nThis concert may be attended either in person\, or virtually via livestream. When your ticket order includes a livestream ticket\, your confirmation email contains a link that opens a browser-based player. For large-screen viewing\, access the email via your smart TV’s web browser. “Casting” your device’s screen to a TV may also be an option. \n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \nFor 2022\, the Festival’s main stage is again temporarily transplanted from our signature Tent Concert Hall in Mendocino Headlands State Park to the beautiful\, iconic and historic 1938 Cotton Auditorium in nearby Fort Bragg. We’re pleased to also welcome the return of more intimate concerts in Preston Hall\, our smaller Mendocino venue. While we’d hoped to be back in the Tent Concert Hall this year\, the combination of pandemic-related disruptions in the availability of vital resources (such as labor) and lingering uncertainty about public health conditions this summer would have made that an unacceptably risky proposition. Meanwhile\, work is under way toward our 2023 return to our home since 1985\, the Tent Concert Hall on the Mendocino Headlands. \n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n	\n \nProof of completed COVID-19 vaccination\, including at least one booster\, is required\, and masks must be properly worn at all times while on event premises. Though it might exceed official requirements\, this policy is based on current conditions and the results of our most recent audience survey. \n\n \n	\n\n\n\nCHOOSE SEATS AND BUY

Immerse yourself in his world and his music\, and understand how his music evolved over his lifetime with narrated chamber recitals featuring exciting guest artists\, and various other settings of Debussy’s work across the Festival. \nExplore the Series \nIf you’d like to familiarize yourself with some of this music in advance\, we recommend the following recordings and notes: String Quartet performance\,  String Quartet notes\, more String Quartet notes\, Afternoon of a Faun performance\, Faun notes. It’s something unique that needs to be experienced.” -Ken Bullock\, Berkeley Daily Planet

SUMMARY:The StepCrew
DESCRIPTION:Created by Cara Butler and Jon and Nathan Pilatzke (longtime touring members of The Chieftains)\, The StepCrew combines Irish\, Tap and Ottawa Valley Step dancing\, music\, and song. The virtuosic cast of 11 dancers and musician\, made up of leading performers in today’s Celtic music scene\, has appeared on the stages of Celtic festivals all over the world. \nThe StepCrew is a brilliant visual and musical display of the most talented dancers I’ve seen. It’s refreshing to see a performance of this style based on pure ability as the dancers are certainly nothing less than virtuosic in their respective styles. The first time I saw Jon and Nathan Pilatzke dancing with Cara Butler was the best thing I’d seen since sliced bread. Having worked with them for the last eight years has been a true tonic for The Chieftains. The StepCrew does not simply draw their audience in\, they take them by the hand and remind us what dance is meant to be about – fun.”- Paddy Moloney\, The Chieftains \nThe StepCrew is a show that very simply\, cannot be missed. The focus\, energy\, and sheer virtuosity on display from the entire cast is nothing short of mind-boggling. I have yet to encounter a dance show of such unique proportions\, seamlessly blending the best of three different percussive styles into what can only be called a tour de force. The StepCrew is truly one of the most exciting things I have seen in a long time.”- Jean Butler of Riverdance\, Dancing on Dangerous Ground \n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \nFor 2022\, the Festival’s main stage is again temporarily transplanted from our signature Tent Concert Hall in Mendocino Headlands State Park to the beautiful\, iconic and historic 1938 Cotton Auditorium in nearby Fort Bragg. The group will play the innovative Haydn String Quartet in C Major\, Ravel’s lyrical and virtuosic String Quartet in F\, and Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 7 in F-sharp minor.
