There’s a sense of immediacy to her delivery\, weaving in and out of the playing\, an intimately conceived present awareness of this heritage. It’s something unique that needs to be experienced.” -Ken Bullock\, Berkeley Daily Planet\n \nExplore the Series \n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n	\n \nThe Festival will celebrate Igor Stravinsky with a film and 17 works spread across eight different concerts. On Sunday\, July 6th\, Susan Waterfall’s film\, “Why We Love Igor\,” will provide an overview of the life and work of the 20th century’s greatest composer. The Russian-born composer revolutionized music with his ballets and experiments with rhythm and dissonance. Two concerts (one of which will be performed twice) will be devoted entirely to works by Stravinsky. Chamber Masterpieces will be played in the tent; Stravinsky at Home\, in Preston Hall\, will feature intimate and varied music by the composer\, dedicated to his wives\, children\, and close friends. Stravinsky’s varied compositions will be heard in other orchestra concerts and in Preston Hall performances.

SUMMARY:Susan Waterfall presents: Fauré in His World
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the exciting premiere of Susan Waterfall’s new film\, Fauré in His World. Immerse yourself in the composer’s world\, and enhance your experience of the many Fauré offerings in this summer’s Festival: the Festival Orchestra’s performance of his Elégie; Jeffrey LaDeur and Kindra Scharich’s performance of his L’hiver a cesse; the Calder Quartet’s performance of his only string quartet; and the two narrated chamber music concerts\, The Early Salon Years and Indian Summer. \nWaterfall’s film explores the cultural milieu and creative life of Gabriel Fauré (1845–1924) through art and photographs from his era and excerpts from all his major works. \nA Q&A will follow the screening. Thanks to Deborah Whigham and Gary Ratway for sponsoring this screening. \nWritten and directed by Susan Waterfall.\nArt and photograph collection by Mina Cohen.\nFilmed and edited by Julian Pollack. \nGET TICKETS\n\n\n	\n \n2024 Featured Composer: Gabriel Fauré\n \nFor 2024\, Susan Waterfall’s composer series will feature the innovative and influential Gabriel Fauré. Immerse yourself in his world and his music\, and understand how his music evolved over his lifetime with narrated chamber recitals featuring exciting guest artists\, and various other settings of Fauré’s work across the Festival. \nExplore the Series \nWaterfall’s productions always present exciting\, absorbing playing of great music\, but are also rare\, distinctive examples of what can be called music education\, though they’re more conversational\, truly a sharing of perspective\, interest\, anecdote. There’s a sense of immediacy to her delivery\, weaving in and out of the playing\, an intimately conceived present awareness of this heritage. It’s something unique that needs to be experienced.” -Ken Bullock\, Berkeley Daily Planet\n \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n	\n \nMusic critic Alex Ross describes the music of Fauré\, Proust’s favorite composer\, as “a bittersweet\, complicated happiness.” Gabriel Fauré’s songs and chamber music conjure the essence of Belle Epoque Paris with its unmatched assemblage of Symbolist and Impressionist artists. His music is the counterpart of gorgeous pre-Raphaelite imagery and the shapely lines of Art Nouveau. Throughout a life enriched by the salons\, and by the beautiful and talented women of his era\, Fauré created an intimate and subtle art\, a welcome antidote to today’s world. The sensuality and elan of Fauré’s music are balanced by its purity and ineffable beauty. \nFauré wrote some of his most astonishing music in his late seventies\, music strangely untouched by the Great War and its aftermath. This introspective and deeply expressive music evolved\, like late Beethoven\, from the isolation brought on by Fauré’s increasing deafness. \nWith a biographical film and three programs displaying his long and productive life you will learn all about this fascinating composer and feast in his sumptuous world. With this concert series and film\, Susan Waterfall completes her exploration of the great triumvirate of composers who created the glorious efflorescence of late 19th and early 20th century French music.

SUMMARY:Maurizio! The Life and Times of Maurice Ravel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the exciting premiere of Susan Waterfall’s new film Maurizio! The Life and Times of Maurice Ravel. Immerse yourself in the composer’s world\, and enhance your experience of the many Ravel offerings in this summer’s Festival: the Festival Orchestra’s Daphnis et Chloé Suite No. 2; the Calder’s performance of his String Quartet in F Major\, the only one he wrote; Jeffrey LaDeur and Kindra Scharich’s performance of his song cycles\, Histoires Naturelles and Deux épigrammes de Clément Marot and his Valses nobles et sentimentales for piano; and the two narrated chamber music concerts The Lure of the Exotic and The Attraction of Modernism. \nYou’ve heard music by Ravel and probably loved it. You’ve heard random gossip about this secretive composer. Now’s your chance to experience Ravel’s life and music in its historic context. With contemporary art and photographs\, and 26 musical excerpts\, you’ll get an overview of a composer whose creative life spanned the voluptuous conclusion of the Belle Epoque\, the trauma of the First World War\, and the new paths to modernism that emerged in the 20’s and 30’s. 85 years after his death\, nosy biographers are still trying to understand Ravel’s mysterious private life\, as inscrutable as his music is irresistible. \nGET TICKETS\n\n\n	\n \n2023 Featured Composer: Maurice Ravel\n \nFor 2023\, Susan Waterfall’s composer series will feature the innovative and influential Maurice Ravel. SUMMARY:Piano Series: Gloria Cheng
DESCRIPTION:The Washington Post called Gloria Cheng “one of the most adventurous interpreters of contemporary music around.” Among the pieces she will play this year are “32 Garlands for Steven Stucky\,” tributes by a number of composers to their colleague and much-beloved professor/composer\, who died unexpectedly in 2016. Stephen Andrew Taylor’s “Seven Memorials” was inspired by a project of the artist Maya Lin\, to build a ‘last memorial’ to the extinction of species on our planet. With “Recombinant\,” by Wang Lu and Anthony Cheung\, and “Pianobells\,” by Zhou Long\, Cheng will interpret the works of Chinese composers now based in the United States. \nSee the program below\n\n\n	\n \n \nFor 2022\, the Festival’s main stage is again temporarily transplanted from our signature Tent Concert Hall in Mendocino Headlands State Park to the beautiful\, iconic and historic 1938 Cotton Auditorium in nearby Fort Bragg. We’re pleased to also welcome the return of more intimate concerts in Preston Hall\, our smaller Mendocino venue. While we’d hoped to be back in the Tent Concert Hall this year\, the combination of pandemic-related disruptions in the availability of vital resources (such as labor) and lingering uncertainty about public health conditions this summer would have made that an unacceptably risky proposition. Meanwhile\, work is under way toward our 2023 return to our home since 1985\, the Tent Concert Hall on the Mendocino Headlands. \n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n	\n \nProof of completed COVID-19 vaccination\, including at least one booster\, is required\, and masks must be properly worn at all times while on event premises. Though it might exceed official requirements\, this policy is based on current conditions and the results of our most recent audience survey. \n\n \n	\n\n\n\nCHOOSE SEATS AND BUY

Rahman)\n\n\n\n	\n \n \nFor 2022\, the Festival’s main stage is again temporarily transplanted from our signature Tent Concert Hall in Mendocino Headlands State Park to the beautiful\, iconic and historic 1938 Cotton Auditorium in nearby Fort Bragg. SUMMARY:Wonder Women: Hidden Heroines of Music History\, Kayleen Asbo\, Ph. D.
DESCRIPTION:Composer\, musicologist and pianist Kayleen Asbo\, the acclaimed cultural historian for the Santa Rosa Symphony\, will introduce us through lecture and performance to four of the most fascinating women from music history. Meet Hildegard von Bingen\, a Benedictine abbess of the 12th century whose art\, music and writings about nature contain revelations of wonder for our own time; Italian courtesan Barbara Strozzi\, whose ravishing works for voice and lute are models of intimate sensuality; the genteel Fanny Mendelssohn\, who was the musical colleague and soul mate of her famous brother Felix\, and whose own magnificent 400+ compositions (some published under Felix’s name) are only being rediscovered and published in the past few decades. Our afternoon ends with a performance of the music of the heroic Clara Schumann\, dubbed the “High Priestess of the Piano” by Franz Liszt\, a woman whose lifelong career as celebrated performer and teacher also encompassed the role of mother to eight children\, muse and champion for both her beloved husband Robert Schumann and her devoted friend Johannes Brahms.\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n	\n \nKayleen Asbo is a passionate scholar: a cultural historian\, musician\, writer and teacher who weaves myth\, music\, psychology\, history and art with experiential learning. A faculty member of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music for seventeen years\, Kayleen also teaches regularly for the Osher Life Long Learning Institutes at UC Berkeley\, Sonoma State University and Dominican University. Her classes on a wide array of topics ranging from Depth Psychology to Dante to Contemporary Classical Music have been hailed as “inspirational\,” “fascinating and compelling\,” “transformational” and “truly life-changing.” \nEducated at Smith College\, Mills College\, the San Francisco Conservatory\, Pacifica Graduate Institute and the University of California\, Kayleen wrote her Ph.D dissertation on Passion and Paradox: The Myths of Mary Magdalene in Music\, Art and Culture. Kayleen also holds three master’s degrees: one each in music (piano performance)\, mythology and psychology. Kayleen has been a guest presenter and lecturer on the intersection of history\, mythology\, psychology and the arts at Oxford University in England\, the Assisi Institute of Depth Psychology Conference in Italy\, the Houston Jung Institute\, Chartres Cathedral in France\, Grace Cathedral and the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. In 2016\, she has taken on the roles as a pre-concert lecturer with the San Francisco Opera and Santa Rosa Symphony and has become a consultant in archetypal psychology\, myth and ritual for Proctor and Gamble.

SUMMARY:Emerging Artists Concert 2014
DESCRIPTION:This is a recital by the outrageously excellent young string players from the Emerging Artists program. The Emerging Artists have won scholarships to receive intensive training at the Festival\, and an opportunity to perform with established professionals in orchestral and chamber concerts. Don’t miss this recital. These are tomorrow’s renowned musicians at the outset of their careers.\niPad/iPhone/Safari Users Click for Ticketing \n\n \nThe Emerging Artists Program began in 1991\, the Mendocino Music Festival’s fifth season\, when the Young Musicians Scholarship Program was inaugurated to nurture young classical musicians in the community and beyond\, and to reinforce orchestral resources. Every year 8 – 12 instrumentalists—talented wind and brass players\, string players and pianists—were chosen to play in the Festival Orchestra and to present chamber music programs\, coached by professionals. By combining the best features of a music camp with a rigorous professional festival\, the program enabled young players to grow musically while enjoying camaraderie with fellow participants and the festival musicians. Like all visiting musicians\, the students were housed with local families\, allowing them to interface with the broader community. \nBeginning in 1998\, the program focused exclusively on string players. In 2007\, Karl Goldstein\, who served as director of the program for many years\, changed the program’s name to “Emerging Artists.” Other directors and coaches have included Anne Crowden\, Bonnie Hampton\, Susan Waterfall\, Burke Schuchmann\, Christina Mok\, Eric Sung\, Jill Brindel\, Roy Malan\, Susan Freier and Julie Feldman\, the current Program Director. \nThe Program Alumni Page gives an impressive peek into the value of this program with personal statements from many of the more than 160 alumni since 1991 on the importance of the Festival experience in their development as musicians\, and on their achievements and career paths. The alumni represent an international community of young musicians who came together for a magical summer experience\, most of whom have gone on to have successful professional musical careers as players\, teachers and administrators who nurture young people themselves. \nThe Festival is proud of the Emerging Artists Program and remains committed to encouraging\, nurturing and showcasing young artists each season to enable them to make significant contributions to the communities where they live and play. This program is free to participants thanks to the generosity of the donors of the Mendocino Music Festival.

SUMMARY:Festival Chamber Players 2014
DESCRIPTION:The concert will consist of the Mozart Quintet in E flat Major for Piano and Winds K.452\, and the Schumann Quintet in E flat Major for Piano and Strings\, played by the world-class Festival Orchestra’s principal players\, joined by pianists Miles Graber and Carolyn Steinbuck. \nMozart wrote his only piano quintet at the height of his powers\, when he was 28 years old.  He had never before attempted a piece for such a combination of instruments: bassoon\, clarinet\, horn and oboe. He wrote to his father\, “I myself consider it to be the best thing I have written in my life.”  For Schumann\, it was the first time a piano was combined with what is now known as a string quartet (substituting cello for double bass). The quintet is considered one of the major works of nineteenth century chamber music.\niPad/iPhone/Safari Users Click for Ticketing

SUMMARY:Kathleen Grace Band 2014
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, July 19\, 2014\, 3:00 PM\nPreston Hall \nA favorite of the Festival as Big Band singer\, Kathleen Grace returns with her own band and her own songs that fuse the musical language of jazz\, rock and folk with extraordinary storytelling abilities. \n“Smart\, alluring and evocative” (Washington Post)\, Kathleen Grace has traveled the world sharing her country\, folk and jazz inspired music with audiences from New York to Peru. Her latest release\, No Place to Fall\, presents Grace’s dynamic original songs alongside revelatory covers of artists as diverse as Duke Ellington\, Tom Waits\, Townes Van Zandt and The Meat Puppets. Grace’s trademark pure sound and deep lyrical connection infuse every moment of the album\, from her deliciously honky-tonk interpretations of standards\, to her own original music. The LA Times has described Grace’s latest project as “Haunting steel-guitar riffs crossed with Grace’s jazz-infused interpretations? Pure buttah!” The ten tracks on No Place to Fall were produced by Sheldon Gomberg whose recent work with Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite just won the 2014 Grammy for Best Blues Album. Grace will be joined on tour this summer by longtime Nashville and LA-based guitarist David Steele\, who has spent years performing with John Prine\, Steve Earle and Lucinda Williams. Her frequent collaborator\, Erik Kertes\, will join her on bass. \nkathleengrace.com \niPad/iPhone/Safari Users Click for Ticketing
