SUMMARY:Breakfast with Chou-Chou
DESCRIPTION:Join Debussy at the breakfast table with his wife and beloved daughter\, Chou-Chou\, as his imagination is stirred by the toys in the nursery\, the paintings on the wall\, and fantasies of sunlit ancient Greece. Susan Waterfall will play the “Children’s Corner” suite\, Eric Kritz will join her on the Rhapsody for Clarinet and Piano\, and Daniel Lockert will team up with her on Six Épigraphes Antiques. Two sonatas will round out the petit-déjeuner: the darkly humorous Sonata for Cello and Piano\, and the magical Sonata for Flute\, Harp and Viola. \nChildren’s Corner Suite\nSusan Waterfall\, piano \nDoctor Gradus Ad Parnassum\nJimbo’s Lullaby\nSerenade for a Doll\nThe Snow is Dancing\nThe Little Shepherd\nGolliwog’s Cakewalk \n\nRhapsody for Clarinet and Piano\nEric Kritz\, clarinet; Susan Waterfall\, piano \n\nSonata for Cello and Piano\nBurke Schuchmann\, cello; Carolyn Steinbuck\, piano \n\n\n\nSix Épigraphes Antiques\nDaniel Lockert and Susan Waterfall\, piano \nTo Invoke Pan\nThe Nameless Tomb\nMay the Night Be Propitious\nThe Dancer with Crotales\nThe Egyptian Woman\nTo Give Thanks for Morning Rain \n\nSonata for Flute\, Harp\, and Viola\nMindy Rosenfeld\, flute; Anna Maria Mendieta\, harp; Nao Kubota\, viola \n\n\n\n	\n \nDebussy: 2022 Featured Composer\n \nFor 2022\, Susan Waterfall’s composer series will feature the innovative and influential Claude Debussy. Immerse yourself in his world and his music\, and understand how his music evolved over his lifetime with narrated chamber recitals featuring exciting guest artists\, and various other settings of Debussy’s work across the Festival. \nExplore the Series \nIf you’d like to familiarize yourself with some of this music in advance\, we recommend the following recordings and notes: String Quartet performance\,  String Quartet notes\, more String Quartet notes\, Afternoon of a Faun performance\, Faun notes. \nWaterfall’s productions always present exciting\, absorbing playing of great music\, but are also rare\, distinctive examples of what can be called music education\, though they’re more conversational\, truly a sharing of perspective\, interest\, anecdote. There’s a sense of immediacy to her delivery\, weaving in and out of the playing\, an intimately conceived present awareness of this heritage. It’s something unique that needs to be experienced.” -Ken Bullock\, Berkeley Daily Planet\n \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \nFor 2022\, the Festival’s main stage is again temporarily transplanted from our signature Tent Concert Hall in Mendocino Headlands State Park to the beautiful\, iconic and historic 1938 Cotton Auditorium in nearby Fort Bragg. We’re pleased to also welcome the return of more intimate concerts in Preston Hall\, our smaller Mendocino venue. While we’d hoped to be back in the Tent Concert Hall this year\, the combination of pandemic-related disruptions in the availability of vital resources (such as labor) and lingering uncertainty about public health conditions this summer would have made that an unacceptably risky proposition. Meanwhile\, work is under way toward our 2023 return to our home since 1985\, the Tent Concert Hall on the Mendocino Headlands. \n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n	\n \nProof of completed COVID-19 vaccination\, including at least one booster\, is required\, and masks must be properly worn at all times while on event premises. Though it might exceed official requirements\, this policy is based on current conditions and the results of our most recent audience survey. \n\n \n	\n\n\n\nCHOOSE SEATS AND BUY

SUMMARY:Brahms: His Life and Times\, featuring Susan Waterfall 2019
DESCRIPTION:Brahms’ momentous meeting with Clara and Robert Schumann when he was only 20 forged a bond of love and familial connection that lasted throughout Brahms’ and Clara’s lifetimes. Susan’s lecture will be supplemented with images and recorded examples. The two chamber concerts divide Brahms’ life roughly in half: before and after 1878\, when he grew the bushy beard he was able to hide behind for the rest of his life. \n\n\n	\n \nProof of completed COVID-19 vaccination\, including at least one booster\, is required\, and masks must be properly worn at all times while on event premises. SUMMARY:Schubert Chamber Music 2 2017
DESCRIPTION:The most domestic of all genres\, the four-hand piano piece\, attained its pinnacle with Schubert’s Fantasy in F minor\, written in the last year of Schubert’s life.  It will be performed by Julian Waterfall Pollack and Susan Waterfall.  The String Quintet in C Major for quartet and an additional cello is a work of supreme inspiration and craft\, an expression of Schubert’s love of life as he faced his early death. \nFestival Chamber Players:\nJay Zhong\, violin\nTammie Dyer\, violin\nDon Ehrlich\, viola\nStephen Harrison\, cello\nDavid Kardarauch\, cello \n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n	\n \nUnderstanding Schubert: Affirmations of Individualism\n \nJoin Susan Waterfall and an array of exceptional Festival musicians for three days of lectures and narrated concerts exploring the life and music of Schubert. The Vienna of Mozart and Beethoven changed with an increasingly large and regimented urban middle class. The inwardness of Schubert’s music mirrored the search for meaning in a world where nature was increasingly seen as the only solace. \nExplore the Series \n“Waterfall’s productions always present exciting\, absorbing playing of great music\, but are also rare\, distinctive examples of what can be called music education\, though they’re more conversational\, truly a sharing of perspective\, interest\, anecdote. There’s a sense of immediacy to her delivery\, weaving in and out of the playing\, an intimately conceived present awareness of this heritage. It’s something unique that needs to be experienced.” Ken Bullock\, Berkeley Daily Planet \n \n	\n\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS

SUMMARY:Schubert Chamber Music 1 2017
DESCRIPTION:Susan Waterfall will play Moments Musicaux and discuss the significance of Schubert’s “character pieces\,” which\, like lieder\, suited the Romantic goals of intimacy and fantasy. Schubert’s exceptional ability to portray women in lieder will be demonstrated by soprano Julie Kierstine and pianist Daniel Lockert. The Octet\, modeled on Beethoven’s popular Septet\, is unusually outgoing\, but its gaiety is outlined with Schubertian shadows. The Octet will be performed by the Festival Chamber Players. \nFestival Chamber Players:\nJay Zhong\, violin\nTammie Dyer\, violin\nDon Ehrlich\, viola\nStephen Harrison\, cello\nMichael Taddei\, contra bass\nEric Kritz\, clarinet\nCarolyn Lockhart\, bassoon\nLarry Lowe\, horn \n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n	\n \nUnderstanding Schubert: Affirmations of Individualism\n \nJoin Susan Waterfall and an array of exceptional Festival musicians for three days of lectures and narrated concerts exploring the life and music of Schubert. SUMMARY:Kathleen Grace 2017
DESCRIPTION:“Smart\, alluring and evocative” (Washington Post)\, Kathleen Grace has traveled the world sharing her country\, folk and jazz inspired music with audiences from New York to Peru. Her latest release\, No Place to Fall\, presents Grace’s dynamic original songs alongside revelatory covers of artists as diverse as Duke Ellington\, Tom Waits\, Townes Van Zandt and The Meat Puppets. Pure buttah!” The ten tracks on No Place to Fall were produced by Sheldon Gomberg whose recent work with Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite just won the 2014 Grammy for Best Blues Album. \n\nGrace will be accompanied by pianist Josh Nelson\, who\, at age 38\, has already performed with some of the most respected names in jazz\, including Natalie Cole\, Anthony Wilson\, George Mraz\, Jeff Hamilton\, Richard Galliano\, Benny Golson\, Sheila Jordan\, Greg Hutchinson\, John Clayton\, Seamus Blake\, Matt Wilson\, Sara Gazarek\, Dave Koz\, Joe Chambers\, Kurt Elling\, John Pizzarelli\, Lewis Nash\, and Peter Erskine.\n\n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS
