SUMMARY:Piano Series: Gloria Cheng 2016
DESCRIPTION:Montage: Great Film Composers and the Piano\nThe six film composers represented on this program have among them amassed 73 Oscar nominations and eight wins. “But\,” ponders the introductory essay to Gloria Cheng’s recent CD\, “what melodies\, harmonies\, what cadences haunt their private dreams?” Hear selections from pieces written expressly for her by John Williams (Star Wars\, Jaws\, E.T.)\, Bruce Broughton (Silverado\, Young Sherlock Holmes)\, Don Davis (The Matrix\, Beauty and the Beast)\, Michael Giacchino (Up\, Lost\, Ratatouille) and Randy Newman (Monsters\, Inc; Toy Story). Alexandre Desplat (The Imitation Game\, Grand Budapest Hotel) contributed a piece originally written for Lang Lang. A documentary film chronicling the composers and Cheng during their recording process completes the performance. \nThe program will feature all six composers on the CD with selections from the following works: \n\nJohn Williams: Conversations (2013)\nAlexander Desplat: L’Étreinte\, from the 3 Études (2012)\nBruce Broughton: Five PIeces for Piano (2010)\nDon Davis: Surface Tension (2013)\nMichael Giacchino: Composition 430 (2013)\nRandy Newman: Family Album: Hommage to Alfred\, Emil and Lionel Newman (2013)\n\nIf you think you have John Williams pegged\, listen to his angular\, questing piano suite Conversations\, which Gloria Cheng has recorded on a new disk titled Montage.” – Alex Ross\, The New Yorker\, February 27\, 2015 \nBUY TICKETS

SUMMARY:Mozart at Home 2015
DESCRIPTION:Some of Mozart’s most charming and self-revelatory works were written for intimate gatherings with friends and family. Learn about the four fascinating musical families who inspired him: the Mozarts\, the Cannabiches\, the Webers\, and the Jacquins. This concert features the poetic and luminous “Kegelstatt” Trio (K. 498)\, written for clarinet\, viola\, and piano\, while Mozart was lawn bowling. It includes piano sonatas K. 309 in C Major and K. 310 in A minor; the Sonata for Piano Four Hands K. 19d\, written when Mozart was 9 years old; excerpts from Four Hand Sonatas K. 381 and K. 521; and an aria from the early opera Lucio Silla K. 135.\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n Keith Lawrence\, violin\n \n \n \n Eric Kritz\, clarinet\n \n \n \n Susan Waterfall\, piano\n \n \n \n Julian Waterfall Pollack\, piano\n \n \n \n Carolyn Steinbuck\, piano\n \n \n \n\n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n	\n \nMozart in Mendocino\, a Four-Part Series\nThis Susan Waterfall production is a four-day exploration of the lesser-known aspects of Mozart’s life and music\, with examinations of his social and cultural context\, both silly and serious. Why was Punch the drink of the Enlightenment? How did Mozart’s bawdy brand of family humor serve to balance his deeply introspective bouts of composing? A coda to the Mozart festivities will be Spencer Myer’s performance of Piano Concerto No. 21 K. 467 with the Festival Orchestra. People came away from last year’s Bachfest saying\, “I thought I knew all about Bach\, but I learned so many fascinating details.” Now on to Mozart! \nSusan Waterfall’s production of the Mozart in Mendocino series is generously sponsored by Thomas Safran. “Waterfall’s productions—which in the past have included such diverse themes as Scandalous Music! Satie\, Debussy\, Ravel and Stravinsky; Bartok’s Women; and Degenerate Music\, the modern music of Germany (and the German émigré community) during the Weimar Republic\, the Nazi era and World War II—always present exciting\, absorbing playing of great music\, but are also rare\, distinctive examples of what can be called music education\, though they’re more conversational\, truly a sharing of perspective\, interest\, anecdote … Her manner is like a friend’s turning at a dinner table to answer a question with expert information and wit. There’s a sense of immediacy to her delivery\, weaving in and out of the playing\, that knits together different perspectives from the past two and a half centuries into an intimately conceived prescience\, a present awareness of this heritage. It’s something unique that needs to be experienced.” Ken Bullock\, Berkeley Daily Planet \n \n	\n\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS

SUMMARY:Alex de Grassi 2015
DESCRIPTION:Grammy-nominated guitarist Alex de Grassi has influenced a whole generation of guitarists with his compositions\, recordings and performances for solo guitar. The Wall Street Journal calls his playing “flawless\,” and New York Guitar Festival director David Spelman hails him as “a treasure.” Having performed previously at the Festival\, he returns to perform his original compositions and unique arrangements—from Hendrix to Gershwin—as well as new compositions for Harp Guitar.  His long-running Summer Intensive Guitar Workshop\, held here on the coast\, runs concurrently with the Festival\, and this year he will be joined on stage by his students to perform a guitar ensemble composition he has composed for the occasion. \nAlex de Grassi\, both Grammy and Indie award nominee\, is an intriguing artist whose mastery of acoustic finger-picking styles includes a variety of techniques and ethnic influences. With trumpet as his first instrument\, he discovered guitar at age thirteen and never looked back. Although primarily self-taught\, de Grassi studied with noted teacher Bill Thrasher. His background also includes a degree in Urban Geography from UC Berkeley and performing as a street artist in London. \nDe Grassi has performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival\, Carnegie Hall\, Belfast International Festival\, Telluride and Wolftrap. He has taught at the National Summer Guitar Workshop and the Milwaukee Conservatory of Music\, among others\, and has his own workshop series. The musician was the subject of a PBS concert/interview television show\, “Alex de Grassi: The Artist’s Profile.” \nBUY TICKETS

SUMMARY:WAHID: Dimitris Mahlis\, oud\, and Chris Wabich\, frame drums 2015
DESCRIPTION:The primary instruments for WAHID (meaning one) are oud and frame drums\, each of which has an ancient history\, as found on clay tablets and papyrus scrolls. A duo combination of oud and frames has never been explored or codified\, even though the two instruments have complimented each other in classical ensembles for hundreds of years. \nThe most common reaction by an audience is shock at how complete the group sounds with just two people. It is best understood live because each performance is a one-time event\, never to be repeated. \nChris constructed his own frame drum setup to expand the tuning range to an octave lower than is normally possible. This made the frame drums function as both a rhythmic and harmonic instrument. Chris took traditional technique and applied a modern coordination aspect. He simultaneously plays riq (tambourine) and bass frame drums while adding other percussive voices. This tour de force can either sound like a complete rhythm section\, just percussive accompaniment\, or just the bass. \nWahid…a duet reaching back to mid-Eastern sounds and traditions in order to create a result that’s remarkably full for being so ostensibly spare…due to Dimitris Mahlis’ extraordinary expressiveness on the stringed instrument he wields so adroitly. In his playing and in Chris Wabich’s almost haunting time-keeping\, emphasis\, and undercurrent can be heard again why Ralph Towner and Oregon were so enamored of that region’s musics.” – Mark S. Tucker\, Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange \nBUY TICKETS

SUMMARY:A Cappella Fever 2015
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Acafellas\, In the Mix\, River\, Cor Unum\, Mendonoma Chamber Chorus\nIs it something in the bracing coastal air? Or is it a kind of fever? It seems this sparsely coastline boasts a far above average number of excellent a cappella groups\, all singing for the love of it\, while working jobs ranging from judge\, to gardener\, to doctor\, to innkeeper\, and more. This year has seen the birth of two new groups: Cor Unum\, a mixed voice trio\, and the Mendonoma Chamber Chorus. This concert will also include three ensembles who delighted the audience last season: men’s quintet Acafellas\, women’s sextet In the Mix\, and women’s trio River. There will be music from four centuries\, everything from madrigals to do-wop. \nBUY TICKETS
