SUMMARY:Kurt Weill: His Life\, His Songs
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Kurt Weill with a screening of Susan Waterfall’s 2021 film\, The Life and Music of Kurt Weill\, followed by a live performance by mezzo-soprano Silvie Jensen with pianist Sarah Cahill. We’ll see the uncut film (including the 21+ minutes missing from the abbreviated\, 49-minute version that got 32\,000+ YouTube views)\, and then enjoy a brief musical performance. \nWhat happens when an impeccably trained young German composer decides he wants a new audience? When a nice Jewish boy starts hanging out with a Marxist poet and a Viennese flapper? When the distinction between highbrow and lowbrow becomes irrelevant? Susan Waterfall and her team have created a film describing Kurt Weill’s life and work\, including a unique collection of both historic and contemporary performances of his songs. Weill communicated the soul and style of Modernity while he survived the sweeping historic changes of Weimar Berlin\, the rise of Hitler\, Paris in the early 1930s\, and Broadway in the 1940s. A Q&A with filmmaker Susan Waterfall will follow the screening. \nAfter a brief intermission\, we’ll be treated to a performance by mezzo-soprano Silvie Jensen and pianist Sarah Cahill of selected Weill works. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\nBUY TICKETS

SUMMARY:Festival Chorale: A Jubilant Song
DESCRIPTION:The Mendocino Music Festival Chorale will perform a concert celebrating American composers\, including music by Aaron Copland\, Norman Dello Joio\, Gwyneth Walker\, and the lovely Frostiana by Randall Thompson. This concert was originally scheduled for 2020 but was cancelled by the pandemic\, so the Festival Chorale is particularly excited (one might even say “jubilant”) to finally be performing this distinct and beautiful music. \nIn addition to Copland\, Dello Joio\, Gwyneth Walker\, and Randall Thompson\, the Chorale will perform gorgeous Mack Wilberg arrangements of traditional songs “Down to the River to Pray” and “Shenandoah.” Barbara Faulkner will join Daniel Lockert in the four-hand accompaniments for these songs\, and for the two Copland pieces. \nJenny Matteucci\, conductor; Daniel Lockert\, piano\nFestival Chorale members are: \n\nSoprano: Cynthia Frank\, Robin Knutson\, Kathy O’Shea\, Abigail Strock\, Laura Vague\nAlto: Cathy Boxell\, Jo Britton\, Deborah Farmar\, Evelyn Harris\nTenor: Joel Ginsberg\, Patrick Gomes\, James Sibbet\, David Strock\nBass: Jim Blanton\, Paul Friesen\, Jason Kirkman\, Randy Knutson\n\n\n	\n \nThe Mendocino Music Festival Chamber Chorale\, directed by Festival Chorus Master Jenny Matteucci\, was formed in 2018 as an offshoot of the much larger Festival Chorus\, members of which were invited to audition. \nFestival Artistic Director Allan Pollack: “I’ve been touched by the dedication of the members of the Festival Chorus\, and so have wanted to create an opportunity for people who are ready to take their choral singing to the next level.” Festival Chorus Master Jenny Matteucci reports\, “It is a joy to work with a group of singers who are willing to do the hard work on vocal technique in order to make increasingly excellent and inspiring music together.” \n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n Public ticket sales begin May 6\, 2026\, at noon Pacific. SUMMARY:Festival Chamber Chorale Presents Brahms' Liebeslieder (Love Song) Waltzes
DESCRIPTION:An Afternoon with Brahms in Vienna\nEnjoy the delights of Brahms’ Vienna with a lovely springtime concert on Mother’s Day. There will be pretty little tables\, delicious pastries\, and a lot of great music. Flowers\, too. Jenny Matteucci will conduct the Festival Chamber Chorale\, and Daniel Lockert and Susan Waterfall will play the duo-piano accompaniment\, plus the marvelously dramatic Hungarian Dances\, No. 1 in G minor\, No. 4 in F minor\, and No. 10 in E Major. Daniel will play Intermezzos Op. 118 No. 1 and No. 2\, plus the Ballade Op. 118\, No. 3. Ana Lucas will sing two duets with Jenny: “Weg der Liebe” and “Die Meere.” Jenny will sing the gorgeous “Dein Blaues Auge.” \n \nThe Liebeslieder Waltzes are love songs written in the popular Ländler style of the day; a sort of wild\, down-home precursor to what became the more upper-class waltz. Brahms meant the pieces to be performed in informal home gatherings\, rather than in concert halls. The sixteen short “waltzes” range from bittersweet longing to joyous exuberance\, and the 4-hand piano accompaniments are glorious in their own right. Susan Waterfall says: “The music is so marvelous—exactly what Brahms loved when he wasn’t tearing his hair out trying to reconcile the past and future of classical music.” \n\n\n\n\n	\n \nThe Mendocino Music Festival Chamber Chorale\, directed by Festival Chorus Master Jenny Matteucci\, was formed in 2018 as an offshoot of the much larger Festival Chorus\, members of which were invited to audition. \nAccording to Festival Artistic Director Allan Pollack\, “I’ve been touched by the dedication of the members of the Festival Chorus\, and so have wanted to create an opportunity for people who are ready to take their choral singing to the next level.” Festival Chorus Master Jenny Matteucci reports\, “It is a joy to work with a group of singers who are willing to do the hard work on vocal technique in order to make increasingly excellent and inspiring music together.” \nMembers are Randy Knutson\, Pamela Hudson\, Linda Perry\, Cynthia Frank\, Robin Knutson\, Ana Lucas\, Elaine Wing Hillesland\, Evelyn Harris\, Jo Britton\, Cathy Boxell\, Jason Kirkman\, John Dixon\, Jim Blanton\, Eric Hillesland\, Andria Richey and Paul Friesen. \n\n \n	\n\n\nGreat news: A generous donation toward this fundraiser has allowed us to drop the ticket price!\nClick to Reserve Now

SUMMARY:A Cappella Fever 2014
DESCRIPTION:The Coast is home to several excellent small a cappella groups\, all singing for the pure love of it while holding down their day jobs.  Men’s Acafellas\, women’s In the Mix\, women’s trio River\, and SATB Sine Nomine will sing music from four centuries\, everything from do-wop\, to gospel\, to hit tunes from the ‘40s\, to madrigals. The singers in A Cappella Fever all were inspired by the House Jack’s workshop last year. As House Jacks member Deke Sharon put it\, “You want to touch people’s hearts\, grab their souls\, and take them on a wild roller coaster ride through truth and beauty.”\niPad/iPhone/Safari Users Click for Ticketing

SUMMARY:Emerging Artists Concert 2013
DESCRIPTION:Emerging Artists 2012 Concert \nFriday\, July 26\, 4:00pm\nPreston Hall \nRecital by participants in the Emerging Artists Scholarship Program.\nThe Emerging Artists Program began in 1991\, the Mendocino Music Festival’s fifth season\, when the Young Musicians Scholarship Program was inaugurated to nurture young classical musicians in the community and beyond\, and to reinforce orchestral resources. Every year 8 – 12 instrumentalists—talented wind and brass players\, string players and pianists—were chosen to play in the Festival Orchestra and to present chamber music programs\, coached by professionals. By combining the best features of a music camp with a rigorous professional festival\, the program enabled young players to grow musically while enjoying camaraderie with fellow participants and the festival musicians. Like all visiting musicians\, the students were housed with local families\, allowing them to interface with the broader community. \nBeginning in 1998\, the program focused exclusively on string players. In 2007\, Karl Goldstein\, who served as director of the program for many years\, changed the program’s name to “Emerging Artists.” Other directors and coaches have included Anne Crowden\, Bonnie Hampton\, Susan Waterfall\, Burke Schuchmann\, Christina Mok\, Eric Sung\, Jill Brindel\, Roy Malan\, Susan Freier and Julie Feldman\, the current Program Director. \nThe Program Alumni Page gives an impressive peek into the value of this program with personal statements from many of the more than 160 alumni since 1991 on the importance of the Festival experience in their development as musicians\, and on their achievements and career paths. The alumni represent an international community of young musicians who came together for a magical summer experience\, most of whom have gone on to have successful professional musical careers as players\, teachers and administrators who nurture young people themselves. \nThe Festival is proud of the Emerging Artists Program and remains committed to encouraging\, nurturing and showcasing young artists each season to enable them to make significant contributions to the communities where they live and play. This program is free to participants thanks to the generosity of the donors of the Mendocino Music Festival. \niPad/iPhone/Safari Users Click for Ticketing

SUMMARY:Thelonious Monk Institute National Performing Arts High School All-Star Jazz Sextet 2013
DESCRIPTION:Saturday July 20\, 3:00 PM\nPreston Hall\n“When you hear how great these young kids play\, you know the future of our music is in good hands.” – Thelonius Monk\, Jr. (monkinstitute.org) \nMiles Berry\, 18\, New Orleans Center for Creative Arts – tenor saxophone\nJoel Ross\, 17\, Chicago High School for the Arts – vibes\nNick Saia\, 17\, LaGuardia High School of Music & Art\, NYC – guitar\nJames Francies\, 17\, High School for the Performing & Visual Arts\, Houston – piano\nJose Albizu\, 17\, New World School of the Arts\, Miami – bass\nMichael Mitchell\, 18\, Booker T. Washington High School for the Arts\, Dallas – drums \nThe Institute’s National Performing Arts High School Program has been designed to facilitate the education of gifted music students who are currently attending public performing arts high schools across the nation. The Program offers these students the opportunity to participate in a pre-conservatory\, highly specialized performance-based jazz curriculum\, study with some of the world’s most eminent jazz artists and educators\, perform in a jazz combo composed of their peers\, and prepare for entry into the country’s most distinguished conservatories and university schools of music. Included is instruction in Jazz Improvisation\, Theory\, Composition\, History\, and Styles and Analysis. The Institute works with each school in developing jazz curricula and instructional methodology; provides ongoing private and group instruction with Institute teaching staff and visiting artists and educators; offers special residences with jazz masters; and arranges high-profile performance opportunities for the student ensembles. \nThe best of the best were selected to participate in the Institute’s 2013 Peer-to-Peer Jazz Education Program. Through this national initiative\, the Institute invites jazz combos comprising music students from the country’s leading public performing arts high schools to participate in weeklong peer-to-peer jazz informance tours. The young musicians gain invaluable performance experience playing alongside internationally acclaimed artists. At the same time\, they help educate young audiences in public schools throughout the United States about America’s indigenous musical art form. The students play and talk about jazz\, teaching their peers not only about the music and its rich history\, but also about the deeply held American values it represents: teamwork\, unity with ethnic diversity\, democracy\, and the vital importance of really listening to one another. \nThelonious Monk Institute National Performing Arts High School Jazz Program Participants \nArts High School\, Newark\, NJ\nBooker T.
