SUMMARY:Poncho Sanchez and his Latin Jazz Band 2014
DESCRIPTION:Featured wines at this performance Poncho Sanchez’s music is a swirl of some of the hottest colors and brightest lights to emerge from either side of the border. At every show Latin jazz\, swing\, bebop\, salsa and other infectious grooves collide and churn with results that are no less than dazzling. Among the more prominent figures that inform his music are conga drummer and composer Chano Pozo\, and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie. \nPoncho Sanchez says\, “There’s room for a lot of different sounds in our music. We put it all together in a pot\, boil it together and come out with a big stew. This isn’t some marketing strategy to sell records. These are the sounds I grew up with. So when I play this music\, I’m not telling a lie. I’m telling my story. This is the real thing.” \nIn 2000\, Sanchez and his ensemble won the Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album for their work on the Concord Picante album Latin Soul. In 2012 Sanchez received A Lifetime Achievement Award from the Latin Recording Academy. As a teen\, Sanchez first learned to play guitar from “the guy across the street” because he couldn’t afford to buy an instrument. In this recital\, with pianist Miles Graber\, von Stade will sing songs by Ned Rorem\, Louis Guy\, Jake Heggie\, Maurice Ravel\, Virgil Thompson\, Aaron Copland\, Gustav Mahler\, and Steven Sondheim and others. \n“Even if she were not one of the great singers of our day\, mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade could probably draw a full house of people eager just to be in her presence and watch her be herself. Find out more interesting and seldom considered facts in a multi-media lecture with historian Bob Winn\, noted beer authority Jay R. Brooks\, and scholar/pianist Susan Waterfall\, covering life in early 18th century Germany\, an overview of Bach’s life\, and beer making in Bach’s time. Beer tasting and Quodlibets! \nAnchor Brewing’s Bock Beer comes closest to resembling the beer of Bach’s time. It’s brewed from a complex blend of malts\, and fresh\, whole-cone hops. In the ancient bock tradition\, the dark-colored craft brew is released in time for springtime celebrations. Bock beers are believed to have originated in the town of Einbeck\, Germany and traditionally feature a goat on their labels.
